Budding historians will be given the chance to examine a collection of silver Roman coins when the Beau Street hoard goes on tour this autumn.

The hoard, which includes 17,577 silver coins, was excavated by archaeologists on the site of the new Gainsborough Hotel in Beau Street, Bath, in 2007.

In March the council was awarded a grant of £372,500 from The Heritage Lottery Fund to purchase the hoard and put it on display.

A Photo is Worth 1,000 Words (Except When It’s Not Enough)

A Guest Blog from Jenna Van Valen, photographer here at DWN.

We’ve all heard the numismatic mantra, “Buy the coin, not the holder.” But what about those times we can’t view the coin in person? Surely we can’t all attend every convention, every auction, visit every dealer and view their inventory. We rely on dealers we trust, we rely on their descriptions, and we hope that the photo tells enough of a story that we can Full article at the source>

Two Sales, Three Coins, One Opinion: One Dealer’s Quick Take on the ANA Auctions

August 26, 2014 in Blogs, Coin Dealers, Coin Shows, Coins, Collecting, Numismatic Societies and Clubs, Numismatica, Numismatics, Opinion

By Doug Winter

The ANA week has never been easy for a small numismatic firm like mine to handle, and when I learned that this year’s version included not one but two companies’ auctions I let out an audible groan. This was repeated when I saw the offerings online: both Heritage and Stack’s Bowers had impressive sales, and I would need to carefully view them.

I booked flights to Orange County and Dallas to view the sales in person Full article at the source>

Jersey hoard: Archaeologists unpick 70,000 coins

August 23, 2014 in Ancient Coins, Anthropology, Antique Coins, Archaeology, Coins, History, News, Numismatica, Numismatics, Treasure, Treasure Hunting, World Coins

Work to separate 70,000 Celtic coins and pieces of jewellery is taking place under the public gaze at Jersey Museum.

Researchers aim to remove and clean up to 500 coins a week for the next three years in a specially built glass-walled lab.

The metal detector enthusiasts who made the find are now part of the team working on the project.

They unearthed the hoard, though to be the world’s largest, in 2012 in a field in Grouville.

For the past two years the team, led by Jersey Heritage conservator Neil Mahrer, has been documenting the hoard, which is about 2,000 years old.

U.S. Mint Platinum Coins Bypassed in Rush for Gold

By Debarati Roy.  Aug 21, 2014 (http://www.bloomberg.com/)

Five months after the U.S. Mint began producing coins made with platinum, sales have all but collapsed as investors continue to favor gold and silver.

“It’s not considered a currency,” said Jason Carstensen, a medical-sales representative in Ventura, California, who spends about $2,000 a month on coins. Gold and silver have value as hedges against a devaluation of the dollar, while platinum is viewed as an industrial commodity, he said.

(New York, New York) — The Professional Numismatists Guild (www.PNGdealers.org) will conduct a coin and paper money show in the Times Squares area of New York City, October 9 – 11, 2014.  The PNG New York Invitational will be open to the public at the Millennium Broadway Hotel, 145 West 44h Street, just half a block East of Broadway.

Major auctions will be conducted in conjunction with the show by both Heritage Auctions (www.HA.com) and Stack’s Bowers Galleries (www.StacksBowers.com).

The three-day show is being produced by the same experienced team that has successfully created PNG Days and other collectibles shows across the country for over two decades.

“This will be the first major rare coin and paper money show with PNG backing in mid-town Manhattan in nearly 20 years,” said PNG Executive Director Robert Brueggeman.  “We’re excited about the opportunities for collectors and dealers to conveniently get together for a premier show in the heart of the Broadway Theater District with everything it has to offer for visitors as well as New York area residents.”

More than 100 dealers are expected to have tables at the show.  A limited number of tables are still available, and dealers do not have to be PNG members to obtain a table at the show.

Public registration will be on the 7th floor of the hotel.  Admission will be $10 at the door; however, $5 admission coupons are available online at www.PNGdealers.org and admission is free with an invitation from participating PNG member-dealers.

The PNG has obtained special discount hotel rates at the Millennium Broadway that are more than $100 per night lower than currently available even on hotel discount websites for that busy period.  A special discount rate of $329 per night is available by calling the Millennium Broadway Hotel, (212) 768-4400,

and requesting “the PNG convention rate” at the time of booking.

Public hours will be Thursday, October 9, from 10 am to 6 pm; Friday, October 10, from 9 am to 6 pm; and on Saturday, October 11, from 9 am to 5 pm.

(Rosemont, Illinois) — A new silver bullion coin by the Royal Canadian Mint that depicts a bald eagle in flight while clutching a fish in its talons is being praised by an award-winning rare coin and precious metals expert.

“This beautiful design captures the magnificence of a Bald Eagle, and the coin itself provides collectors and investors a convenient way to own one-ounce of 99.99 percent pure silver,” said Michael Fuljenz, President of Universal Coin & Bullion (www.UniversalCoin.com) in Beaumont, Texas.

The front of the coin has a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Fuljenz examined examples of the new precious metal coin when they made their first appearance in the United States at the American Numismatic Association Chicago World’s Fair of Money in Rosemont, Illinois, August 5 – 9, 2014.

“This is the second in a popular series of Royal Canadian Mint silver bullion coins with the theme, ‘Birds of Prey.’  After seeing them in person, I’m recommending the Bald Eagle coins for both first-time buyers of precious metals and long-term investors as well as anyone interested in the glorious natural beauty of eagles,” said Fuljenz.

Fuljenz served as an expert consultant to the Royal Canadian Mint on the 2013 Pronghorn Antelope design that was part of an earlier series of bullion coins commemorating North American wildlife.

Known as America’s Gold Expert®, Mike Fuljenz has won more than 50 prestigious national and regional awards the past two decades for his consumer education and protection work in rare coins and precious metals, including “The Clemy,” the highest honor bestowed by the influential Numismatic Literary Guild.  He is a respected community leader in his hometown of Beaumont.  Mike Fuljenz also has served with distinction as a consultant to the Federal Trade Commission and, and is on the Boards of Directors of the Industry Council For Tangible Assets, Numismatic Literary Guild and Beaumont Crime Stoppers.
