We are continuing our series on interesting coins costing less than $100 with what is arguably America’s most loved and hated denomination: the cent. We have discussed the Lincoln Wheat cent series in an earlier article, and now we will go further back in time to the Indian Head cent series, which was produced from 1859 to 1909.

These coins played an important role in American commerce over a 50-year period that began before the Civil War and ended in the 20th century. Produced in large quantities most years, there are several rare and scarce dates, some of which… Full article at the source>

United States Treasury Secretary Jack Lew will announce today that after much debate and consideration abolitionist Harriet Tubman has been chosen to replace President Andrew Jackson on the front of the $20 bill. The change will not go into effect until 2030, but the new design will be shared with the public in 2020 as part of the run up to the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

Yesterday, April 18, the U.S. Mint began accepting orders for 2016 Cumberland Gap 5 oz. silver bullion coins from its authorized purchasers. Now, after two days of availability, the issue has already sold 53,000 pieces, giving it the sixth-highest mintage ever for a 5 oz. America the Beautiful silver coin.

Considering that the Cumberland Gap 5 oz. coins were awarded an overall mintage limit of 150,000 pieces across bullion and Uncirculated strikes, it’s highly probable that the Mint will produce a lot more of these, especially as sales for the previous issue in the series — featuring Shawnee National… Full article at the source>

More Than 1 Million Silver Eagles Sold in Last Three Days

The U.S. Mint’s authorized buyers have purchased this week’s entire 1,036,000-ounce allocation of American Eagle Silver bullion coins in just three days, bringing this year’s overall sales total for the issues to 17,000,000 one-ounce coins sold.

This development is particularly striking as the Mint’s weekly allocations have not sold out in recent weeks, and it looked for a moment that the supply of Silver Eagles might finally be starting to outpace demand for the issues. But the value of silver has shown signs of strength this week, climbing to a near six-month high today at $15.98 an ounce, which Full article at the source>

What is the Rarest New Orleans Half Eagle?

April 13, 2016 in Antique Coins, Blogs, Coins, Collecting, Education, Gold, Gold Coins, Numismatica, Numismatics, Rare Coins, USA Coins

By: Doug Winter RareGoldCoins.com (Douglas Winter Numismatics)

A total of 17 half eagles were produced at the New Orleans mint between 1840 and 1909. Focusing on the No Motto Liberty Head issues (struck between 1840 and 1857) there are at least five issues which I would call “rare” (i.e., fewer than 100 examples known in all grades). These are the 1842-O, 1847-O, 1855-O, 1856-O, and 1857-O. Of these five, which is the rarest in terms of overall rarity and which is the rarest in high grades?

We can make a pretty clear determination of these two questions by combing the data in the PCGS auction prices database as… Full article at the source>

Although the average American may not think about it on a daily basis, it would come as no surprise to most that counterfeiting U.S. currency is an industry that is alive and well today. There is a reason the $10 bill is up for a redesign; it’s a security measure to try and keep ahead of counterfeiters, and anyone who has used a larger bill in retail will have seen the special black “markers” that cashiers use to check currency. If it comes out yellow or brown, you’re… Full article at the source>

Unlike the American Silver Eagles, which begin sales in January, the Mexican Mint releases its Libertad bullion (BU) coins whenever they want and this year this means now!

The silver BU coins began their 2016 year by surprising everybody and shipping starting April 1. With silver prices up from a few months ago, it is likely good for business. The Winged Victory design on the liberated pays tribute to the solid bronze statue in Mexico City that is covered in 24k gold and weighs seven tons.

Produced since 1982, and with the current design since 1996, the Mexican Silver Libertad… Full article at the source>

Of all the commemorative coin programs proposed for issue by the U.S. Mint in the next few years, perhaps none has generated more word-of-mouth interest from collectors than the 2019 50th anniversary Apollo 11 Moon Landing Commemoratives. The subject seems like such an obvious home run in its huge potential for exciting designs and big sales that many people — myself included — just assume the proposal has plenty of Congressional support and is sure to pass into law.

Not so, points out Louis Golino in Coin World. According to Golino, the bill, titled HR 2726, has only 63… Full article at the source>
