Unintended Consequences

July 31, 2017 in Ancient Coins, Antique Coins, Art, Blogs, Coins, Collecting, Education, History, Investing, Numismatica, Numismatics, Opinion, Rare Coins, World Coins

By: Wayne G. Sayles Ancient Coin Collecting (Wayne G. Sayles)

Three years ago, coin collector and hobby advocate Scott Barman posted on his blog an insightful article about the nature of what others have described as ideologically inspired bureaucratic overreach. He named the post “An Ancient Dilemma” and discussed the issue of unintended consequences in an era of “hyper-partisanship”. Where other members of the coin hobby and trade—including myself on some occasions—have become understandably emotional on this topic, Mr. Barman exhibits a remarkable degree of restraint and appeals both to law and common sense. In the past several years, he has also written other pieces… Full article at the source>

The following press release is courtesy of the Precious Metals Association of North America (PMANA).

(Washington, D.C.)—Discussions surrounding tax reform have heightened in recent weeks, and the Precious Metals Association of North America (PMANA) has offered testimony before the House Committee on Ways and Means asking for a change in the Internal Revenue Code that would bring fairness to precious-metals bullion and coin investors, while also creating smart investment opportunities for Americans.

Since 1982, gains made on precious-metals bullion have been taxed at the ordinary income rate due to language defining such bullion as a “collectible.” Congress has made numerous attempts to… Full article at the source>

John F. Kennedy commemorative coin bills introduced

July 28, 2017 in Coins, Collecting, Commemorative, Education, History, Legislation, News, Numismatica, Numismatics, US Government, US Mint, USA Coins

By: Coin Update News.CoinUpdate.com (Coin Update News)

On July 17, companion bills were introduced in the House and Senate authorizing production of commemorative coins to honor the birth centennial of President John F. Kennedy. Since last year (and even earlier), collectors have been watching for a blip on the legislative radar that would signal plans for a Kennedy commemorative; as each month passed with nothing to authorize such a program, they became increasingly vocal in their disapproval. Once Kennedy’s 100th birthday (May 29) was in the rearview mirror, most of the complaints gave way to an unhappy sense of resignation.

The oversight has been all the more glaring… Full article at the source>

The government and Treasury of the Falkland Islands have issued (11th July) a new crown coin which remembers the 35th anniversary of the day the islands were officially and wholly liberated from invading forces of the Argentinian Army. The long-running dispute between Britain and Argentina over the ownership of the Falkland Islands was brought to a head on the 19th March 1982, when 50 Argentinians landed on South Georgia Island and hoisted their flag. Under the order of Leopoldo Galtieri, president of Argentina and head of the military junta in charge, the invasion of the Falkland Islands was declared on… Full article at the source>

The Perth Mint, in conjunction with the island of Tuvalu, has released a 1-ounce silver coin honoring the Hindu “festival of light” called Diwali. Celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs not just in India but around the world, Diwali is a five-day festival in honor of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of love and good fortune. Her symbol is gold, so, naturally, gold is the focus of the joyous gift-giving that takes place over the course of the festival.

To celebrate Diwali, Tuvalu and the Perth Mint have once again joined efforts, this time producing a 1-ounce, .9999 fine… Full article at the source>

U.S. Mint sales report: Week ending July 16, 2017

July 20, 2017 in Coins, Collecting, Investing, News, Numismatica, Numismatics, Precious Metals, Silver, Silver Coins, Silver Eagles, US Mint, USA Coins

By: Coin Update News.CoinUpdate.com (Coin Update News)

This report covers the week ending July 16, 2017. The Mint had one new release during this sales period: the 2017 America the Beautiful–Ozark National Scenic Riverways 5-ounce silver Uncirculated coin (17AL). Released on July 11, it handily took the number-one-seller spot on this week’s report, with 13,740 units sold. Among the 5-ounce ATB Uncirculated coins, however, it had one of the weakest opening-week showings ever.

The 2017 American Eagle 1-ounce platinum Proof coin (17EJ)—last week‘s best seller—tumbled to seventh place, but it remains an interesting item. Limited to a mintage of 10,000, the coin was released on July 6… Full article at the source>

Dismantling a Roosevelt dime collection

July 18, 2017 in Auctions, Blogs, Coins, Collecting, Collector Sets, Education, Fun, Grading, News, Numismatica, Numismatics, Opinion, USA Coins

By: Michael Bugeja  News.CoinUpdate.com (Coin Update News)

Last year I won a stunning set of Jefferson nickels and wrote about it for Coin Update, explaining the process to dismantle a set (i.e., removing high-end coins for holdering). The process involves identifying toned coins, which command a premium, then checking for rare varieties or mint errors, and finally, selecting coins based on eye appeal and strike.

With regard to Jefferson nickels, premiums for strike occur with full steps (at least 5) on the reverse Monticello.

This month I won a premium set of Roosevelt dimes (circulation strikes) with a bid of $110 ($128.70 realized price) in an online Proxibid… Full article at the source>

Thematic (or topical) collecting is very popular in the stamp community. There are collectors and clubs for a wide range of subjects, from butterflies to lighthouses and from royalty to astronomy. In the numismatic world, collecting by theme is not as popular or well publicized, but there are still many opportunities to build a collection based on a certain topic, and many collectors who build such collections. In this article we will take a look at some areas of banknote collecting that are likely to give a thematic collector the most opportunity to find examples with a certain theme.

Libertad collecting is a joyous hobby that rests somewhere between the adrenal-stimulating activity of cliff diving and the patient detail-sifting of prospecting sand. This year’s surprise offering from Mexico’s mint is a first. Like the Reverse Proof set of two years ago, it has a precedent: the collecting of bullion silver bars. It also pays homage to the Libertad’s roots as a bullion coin. This silver Proof set is issued in honor of the 35th year of the Libertad’s being offered by the mint as a bullion coin (and silver Proof, gold bullion, gold Proof, and even a rare platinum… Full article at the source>

Returning from its original 14-issue run from 2007 to 2008, the bi-monthly magazine will contain a wealth of numismatic material throughout its 144 pages, including pricing info for PCGS graded rare and modern coins, plus articles from leading PCGS experts.

“There’s always so much going on in numismatics, each and every day, and we’re very excited to share market news, analysis and expertise with the coin collecting community,” said PCGS President Don Willis.
