A brand-new numismatic coin, issued by the Central Bank of Malta, pays homage to a very old symbol: the Maltese Cross.

The origins of the eight-pointed emblem reach back to the 6th century, when it appeared as an ornamental feature in Byzantine art and architecture. It was adopted in the late 15th century as a symbol of the Order of the Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem (the “Knights Hospitaller”)—a Catholic military order that ministered to the pilgrims to the Holy Land. The order provided shelter, medicine, and eventually armed escort. The eight points of the cross were… Full article at the source>

Launch of Belgian Euro Coins for King Philippe

February 24, 2014 in Belgian coins, Coins, Euro Coins, Medals, Royal Mint of Belgium, World Coins

February 24, 2014 By Michael Alexander (http://news.coinupdate.com)

The Royal Mint of Belgium have launched the set of Euro coins which bear the effigy of their new King who succeeded to the Belgian throne upon the abdication of his father King Albert II on the 17th July of last year.

The new portrait which will be used on circulation Euro coins depicts the King who normally wears glasses – without them and in a break with tradition where the Monarch faces to the left on coins – he is depicted facing to the right. His initials, “F P” representing his name in both Flemish and French (Filip – Philippe) are placed to the left of the portrait. The King, who approved the design – was present at the Royal Mint to see the first strikes of the new EURO on the 4th February and also started the minting presses which would produce Belgium’s new circulation coins. The portrait was designed by the Royal Mint’s chief artistic director Luc Luycx who is also the designer of the Eurozone’s common reverse side of all eight denominations.

A new collectible set of gold and silver coins has been minted in France to celebrate the past half century of European cooperation in space.

The Monnaie de Paris, France’s national mint, has issued the “50 Years of European Space Cooperation” collection in time for the 50th anniversary of the founding of the two organizations that led to today’s European Space Agency (ESA).

Established in 1964, the European Launcher Development Organization (ELDO) and the European Space Research Organization (ESRO) merged more than a decade later to create the European Space Agency.

The commemorative euros are part of the French Ministry of Finance’s “Europa” coin series, which since 2002 has paid tribute annually to different individuals or events that have factored into European cooperation and construction.

“Wishing this year to pay tribute to Europe’s successes in space, the Monnaie de Paris naturally turned to ESA,” the European Space Agency described in a statement posted to its website. “The two organizations have been working together since September 2013 on this project now seeing the light of day, which is certain to delight collectors and space enthusiasts alike.”

The Father of Medicine Honored on Gold and Silver Coins

December 4, 2013 in Coins, Collecting, Commemorative, Euro Coins, Gold, Gold Coins, Greek Coins, History, News, Numismatica, Numismatics, Precious Metals, Proof Coins, Silver, Silver Coins, World Coins

December 3, 2013 By Michael Alexander (http://news.coinupdate.com)

The Bank of Greece has issued (2nd December) two new coins which honor the man who is universally acknowledged as the father of western medicine. Hippocrates of Cos (460-377 B.C.) is remembered as the physician who based the art of healing on rational principles and liberating it from divine intervention and/or superstition. He perceived the human being as a whole entity, and health as resulting from multiple factors, including environmental and dietary ones. The Hippocratic Corpus, a collection of works left by Hippocrates and his students, deals with practically all branches of medicine and systematically records clinical symptoms and treatments, always in line with the principle “to do good, or to do no harm“. The Hippocratic Oath remains – all over the world as the guide to medical ethics and practice to this day.

Central Bank coins the wrong phrase

April 12, 2013 in Coin Errors, Coins, Collecting, Commemorative, Euro Coins, Irish Coins, Numismatica, Numismatics, Precious Metals, Proof Coins, Silver, Silver Coins

11/04/2013 (BreakingNews.ie)

There will be a few red faces in the Central Bank today.

They have brought out a silver commemorative coin honouring James Joyce which has an embarrassing mistake on it.
The €10 coin, which is on sale for €46 at the minute (go figure!), has a portrait of Joyce with a misquoted line from his lengthy tome Ulysses.

We’re sure you all know it….

No? Well here it is: “Ineluctable modality of the visible: at least that if no more, thought through my eyes. Signatures of all things I am here to read.”

They are from the third chapter as Stephen Dedalus has a bit of a think on Sandymount Strand.

The Central Bank coin has an extra “that” in the second sentence.
