Krause Publications, sponsors of the 2016 Coin of the Year Awards (COTY), have announced the new COTY winners. Several of the recognized coins were favorites with the panel of international judges, though there were some surprises as well.

Austria: The Mint of Austria was nominated in four separate categories, and managed to scoop the award for Best Silver Coin with their emotive 20 euro piece marking the 25th anniversary of the collapse of the Berlin wall in 1989. On June 25, 2015, Künker auctions a sensation of post-WWII German numismatics: a pattern for the rejected draft by Karl Roth for the first German commemorative coin ‘Germanisches Museum’ (‘Germanic Museum’). Until now, a plaster cast model was the only known testimony!

In August 1952, the German National Museum in Nuremberg celebrated its 100th anniversary. The then Federal President Theodor Heuss, in his capacity as Chairman of the Administrative Board of the National Museum, thought that this jubilee would offer a splendid opportunity to show the public, both at home and abroad, that Germany had indeed changed.
