Gold coins have been a store of value for over 2000 years, from the first natural electrum coins struck in ancient Lydia to modern American gold eagles. Gold serves as a valuable hedge against uncertain financial markets, and coins are the most convenient way to hold physical gold. Coins have more liquidity than gold bullion bars, and there’s no excitement to investing in gold via a precious metals ETF – holding gold in your hand is half the fun!

‘Pawn Stars’ Shop May Have Melted Stolen $50,000 Coin Collection

March 11, 2014 in American Buffalo, Antique Coins, Burglaries, Coins, Gold, Gold Buffalo, Gold Coins, Morgan Silver Dollars, News, Numismatica, Numismatics, Precious Metals, Rare Coins, Silver, Silver Coins, Theft, USA Coins

By ALAN FARNHAM via Good Morning America March 11th, 2014.  (http://abcnews.go.com)

A man whose $50,000 coin collection was first stolen, then hocked, cannot recover it from Las Vegas’ famous “Pawn Stars” pawn shop. Reason: The hock shop claims it melted the coins down.

According to a criminal complaint filed by the State of Nevada in Clark County Justice Court, a coin collection valued by its owner, David Walters, at up to $50,000, was stolen from Walters’ Las Vegas home in November 2013 by Walters’ niece, Jennifer Beckman.

Court documents say Walters’ collection–kept in a bag hidden under a dresser–contained such rarities as a 1903 St. Gaudens $20 gold piece and Silver Morgan coins from the 1880s. It also contained contemporary 1 oz. American Buffalo gold pieces.

US Mint Sales Report: Sales Conclude for Multiple 2012 & 2013 Products

January 3, 2014 in Coins, Collecting, Commemorative, Gold, Gold Buffalo, Gold Coins, Gold Eagles, Half Dollars, Morgan Silver Dollars, News, Numismatica, Numismatics, Platinum, Platinum Coins, Precious Metals, Proof Coins, Quarters, Silver, Silver Coins, Silver Eagles, US Mint, USA Coins

January 2, 2014 By Michael Zielinski   (http://news.coinupdate.com/)

The weekly United States Mint numismatic product sales report includes the latest figures for multiple 2012 and 2013 products which recently concluded sales. The first available numbers for multiple recently released products are also available.

In early December, the US Mint announced their “Last Chance” sale, which gave collectors their final opportunity to place orders for many 2012 and 2013 numismatic products. The products included the 2013 commemorative coins, 2012 First Spouse Gold Coins, 2012 Proof Platinum Eagle, and the 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set. Sales were scheduled to conclude on December 31, although several products sold out early as US Mint inventory levels were exhausted. The sales cut off date for this week’s report is December 29, meaning that figures could still show movement in the following week’s report.

Figures of note for the “Last Chance” products include the individual 2013 5-Star Generals Gold Coins, which show sales of 5,674 for the uncirculated version and 5,950 for the proof version. The proof coin was also included in the 3-Coin Proof Set with reported sales of 9,999 units. There has been significant secondary market price movement for these coins, which concluded sales at historically low levels.

US Mint Sales Report: More Sell Outs for 2013 Coins

December 27, 2013 in Coins, Collecting, Commemorative, Gold, Gold Buffalo, Gold Coins, Gold Eagles, News, Numismatica, Numismatics, Precious Metals, Proof Coins, Silver, Silver Coins, Silver Eagles, US Mint, USA Coins

December 26, 2013 By Michael Zielinski (http://news.coinupdate.com)

The recent parade of sell outs for the United States Mint’s 2013 products has continued. The latest weekly numismatic product sales report includes sales figures for the recently sold out 2013-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle and the uncirculated 2013-P 5 Star Generals $5 Gold Commemorative Coin.

The individual option for the 2013-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle originally went on sale at the US Mint on May 28, 2013. This coin represents a collector version of the popular bullion coin struck on specially burnished blanks and carrying the “W” mint mark. This version typically sees lower sales than the more popular proof version, leading some to believe these “burnished” Silver Eagles have better secondary market prospects in the long run.

A sell out for the 2013-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle occurred late last week with sales indicated at 178,972. Although the individual option has sold out, the coin remains available as part of the 2013 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set, which experienced heavier sales in the wake of the sell out. The set has cumulative sales of 21,011 units.

December 10, 2013 By  (http://news.coinupdate.com)

The latest weekly United States Mint numismatic product sales report includes the opening figures for the 2013 Helen Taft First Spouse Gold Coin. Also, the spate of product sell outs continues with the 2013 Proof Gold Buffalo no longer available.

The Helen Taft Gold Coins went on sale at the US Mint on December 2, 2013, representing the third release of the series in less than three weeks. The proof version was priced at $815 per coin, while the uncirculated version was $795 per coin. This was one increment lower than the prior two releases. The maximum mintage was 10,000 pieces across both versions.

Through the reporting date of December 8, sales have reached 1,467 proofs and 982 uncirculated coins. This makes for a combined total of 2,449 pieces, accounting for 24.49% of the maximum mintage. This was a stronger start compared to the prior two releases, but this may have been due to a longer availability period before the first reported sales.
