Why isn’t the World’s Fair of Money being live streamed?

Since the World’s Fair of Money has opened let me get into my annual rant: Why isn’t the show broadcast for those of us who cannot attend? Once again, work obligations have prevented me from traveling to attend the World’s Fair of Money. Unfortunately, it has been a few years since I was able to […]

Exaggerated descriptions plague coin auctions

June 19, 2017 in Auctions, Coins, Coins for sale, Collecting, E-commerce, Education, Ethics, Grading, Investing, News, Numismatic Crimes, Numismatica, Numismatics, Online Tools, Opinion, USA Coins

By: Michael Bugeja News.CoinUpdate.com (Coin Update News)

I am growing weary reporting exaggerated descriptions in online coin auctions hosted by major portals, such as Proxibid and eBay. While it is difficult for those portals to monitor all lots in multitudes of auctions, it nevertheless hurts the hobby when hyped descriptions are not reported.

Here are just a few recent examples. I could provide many more, but these deal with coin rolls, raw coins, and holdered coins by eBay-approved and unapproved companies.

Let’s start with the “never opened” roll (hover cursor over images to zoom)… Full article at the source>

Grading Capped Bust half dollars

Grading Capped Bust half dollars is a challenge, especially to new hobbyists unaccustomed to the series, which ran from 1807 to 1839 and which continues to be popular because many of the dates are affordable and come with a large selection of die varieties (including overdate strikes).

We’ll save overdates for a future column. This post concerns circulation (business) strikes. The denomination was used heavily in circulation, and that accounts for the typical wear you will see on the high points of the obverse and reverse.

The grading basics of this post concern high points where wear is readily distinguishable: the raised… Full article at the source>

New App, New Features for PCGS Set Registry

The PCGS Set Registry app offers the key elements of the desktop version, as well as some brand new features.

The PCGS Set Registry app offers the key elements of the desktop version, as well as some brand new features.

Newport Beach, California) – Thanks to a brand-new app from Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com), collectors can manage their coin collections from their smartphones. The company just added the PCGS Set Registry companion app to its growing list of mobile apps.

This app, compatible with iOS and Android, comes on the heels of an update to the Set Registry desktop site, which allowed for enhanced mobile compatibility. Both the app and recent update were steps in providing convenience and a renewed experience to users.

“Making the site mobile was a must. It is simply more convenient to manage your set on the go. In addition to the added convenience, we’ve included new features, such as image uploading and the “What If” feature, which we believe will be a hit among set owners,” stated PCGS President Don Willis.

Collectors can now easily upload images directly from their mobile device to their collection. Scanning the coin’s cert number automatically adds the image to the set if a PCGS TrueView™ image is available for the coin. Or, users can take a picture of a coin and instantly upload the image to their inventory.

The “What If” feature shows collectors how a PCGS-graded coin would impact their set by simply scanning or entering the coin’s cert number. Once the coin info is entered, a before and after comparison of their set’s rank, rating and grade is shown.

“Released as a companion app, collectors are encouraged to use both the app and desktop site in tandem for the complete experience,” said Set Registry Director BJ Searls.

Considering the enhanced, mobile experience, the company anticipates the app to be a popular download among collectors.

“With this app, you can update and access your set from anywhere, as long as you can connect to the internet. The interface is streamlined, and it launches and performs functions quickly. There are many reasons collectors will want to download it,” said Willis.

The PCGS Set Registry companion app is available for free download on the App Store and Google Play. Visit www.PCGS.com/apps to learn more.

Developed in 2001, the PCGS Set Registry was the hobby’s first free online tool for organizing and analyzing coin collections. For more information on the PCGS Set Registry, and to start your online collection, visit http://www.PCGS.com/SetRegistry.

Founded in 1986 by distinguished numismatic experts, Professional Coin Grading Service is the most respected coin authentication and grading company in the world and has offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Paris and the United States.

By: Dennis Hengeveld News.CoinUpdate.com (Coin Update News)

Bidding in an auction can be a fun and rewarding experience. This is particularly true of floor auctions, held around the world, where bidders compete for items through a variety of bidding options. While these options vary from auction house to auction house, most collectors can bid in auctions by being at the venue, bidding online, bidding by phone, placing a book bid prior to the auction, or having a representative bid for them at the auction. Each of the methods has its pros and cons, and in this article we will take a look at each of the various… Full article at the source>

Last week, we relayed the announcement by the American Numismatic Association (ANA) that it had formed an online job service to help match numismatic job-seekers with prospective employers. The editor-in-chief of CoinsWeekly, Ursula Kampmann, emailed to let us know about another resource that job-hunters might find useful.

In 2015, the International Numismatic Council (INC) and the International Association of Professional Numismatists (IAPN) decided to launch a platform for online vacancies and applications. As a publication channel they chose the Internet journal MuenzenWoche / CoinsWeekly, which, with its weekly newsletter, aims to build a bridge between university and… Full article at the source>

The Domino Effect of No-Pay Bidders

Online bidders who think coin auctions are a kind of video game do damage, not only to their own credit (if they even have or care about credit) but to portals, auctioneers, consignors and buyers who lost out on bids or who will pay ever-higher premiums when they do win coins.

I used to sell on eBay and had to follow up on no- and slow-pay buyers, often leading to uncivil messages that made me stop doing business on that portal, content to consign to popular auctioneers and pay 10-15% seller fees in addition to more fees for photos and listings…. Full article at the source>

During the last two decades or so, the field of numismatics has evolved tremendously. Where collectors were once limited to buying at local coin shops, at local and national trade shows, and through mail-order lists, the Internet has created an online marketplace that stretches from coast to coast and beyond. Where knowledge—always king—was once difficult to gain, it can now be had with a few clicks of a mouse. It is obvious that the wonderful world of numismatics is changing as always, but these changes are happening more rapidly than ever. What does his mean in the long term? Revamped PNG Website Adds NGC Price Guide

New PNG Home Page

(Temecula, California) – The Professional Numismatists Guild (www.PNGdealers.org) has revamped its website so that collectors now can conveniently find on one site the current retail values of U.S. coins as well as easily locate knowledgeable, reputable rare coin and banknote dealers.  The PNG website also has now been optimized for easy use on mobile devices.

The PNG is a nonprofit organization founded in 1955 and composed today of many of the top dealers in the United States and around the world who must adhere to a strict code of ethics in the buying and selling of numismatic merchandise.  PNG’s revamped website now provides expanded resources to collectors, dealers and the general public.

“In addition to streamlining the ‘Find PNG Dealers’ feature, we now have a prominent link to the extensive Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) online price guide that lists more than 100,000 prices for various U.S. coins in different grades,” said PNG Executive Director Robert Brueggeman.

“NGC is the world’s largest rare coin authentication and grading service, and is the official certification service of PNG.  Their price guide is an authoritative reference for the current values of NGC-certified coins.  So, on one website you can conveniently and quickly get current prices and locate dealers who specialize in buying and selling those coins,” stated PNG President Dana Samuelson.

PNG also plans to add useful “how to” videos to the website to provide useful consumer education and investor protection information.

“Our revised website also offers a link for doing business with members of the PNG Accredited Precious Metals Dealer (APMD) program.  AMPD dealers specialize in buying and selling silver, gold, platinum and palladium bullion coins and ingots.  The APMD website (www.APMDdealers.org) now features current spot prices for precious metals and the top 10 most popular bullion items as well as charts of historical bullion prices,” said Brueggeman.

The NGC Price Guide currently lists values for 125,000 U.S. coins, and can be accessed from desktop computers, tablets and smart phones.

“The NGC U.S. Coin Price Guide features 11 years of historical pricing data with the ability to chart changes in a coin’s value over time and compare historical values for multiple coins. There are two full time analysts, both with decades of coin pricing experience, updating pricing every day in the NGC U.S. Coin Price Guide,” explained NGC Vice President of Sales and Marketing Max Spiegel.

For additional information about the PNG, contact the Professional Numismatists Guild by phone at (951) 587-8300 or by email at info@PNGdealers.org.

(Temecula, California) – The Professional Numismatists Guild’s (www.PNGdealers.org) multi-media education program, originally created only for participants in the PNG internship mentoring program, is now available online to collectors and dealers worldwide.

“There are two levels of online classes developed by Karl Newman in conjunction with the University of Rare Coins and PNG’s Edward C. Milas School of Numismatics.  We are making these available online to anyone who wants to increase their knowledge of numismatics, from the minting process to the business of buying and selling coins,” explained PNG Executive Director Robert Brueggeman.

The Level 100 course is designed to provide broad-based basic knowledge about numismatics.  Topics include purchasing, selling, marketing and auctions; third-party certification; coin shows; and numismatic organizations and industry resources.

Level 200 topics include metallurgy and technology in the science of numismatics; the minting process and errors; and the history of monetary systems and development of coining.

The enrollment fee is $300, and that includes both Level 100 and 200 courses.  Certificates of Completion will be provided to everyone who successfully completes both levels.

Collector and dealer Gilbert Chang of Malaysia is enthusiastic about the online course after recently completing Level 100, and looking forward to studying Level 200 in the coming weeks.  “I did enjoy the (Level 100) course a lot.  Working with Karl (Newman of the University of Rare Coins) was exciting because he is always so enthusiastic about the subject and it rubs off on you!” he told PNG.  Chang proudly now describes himself as the only “certified” numismatist in his country.

Specific information about the educational courses and PNG’s Promoting Numismatic Growth internship program is available at www.PNGdealers.org under the “Internship” navigation links near the top of the PNG’s home page.  For additional information, contact the PNG by phone at (951) 587-8300 or by email at internship@PNGdealers.org.

I’ve been writing about self-slabbed and hyped coins for more than five years on Coin Update News, not only because of the inherent dishonesty of auctioneers calling a silver-melt Morgan MS67, but also because of concerns about the hobby.

One bad transaction in which a significant sum is lost, based on misleading or even fraudulent information, and the buyer will typically cease collecting coins.

In a 2010 Coin Update News article, I noted that eBay (but not Proxibid) had changed its coins and currency rules to exclude grades and values from titles, item specifics, and descriptions for any lot not… Full article at the source>

New Collectors.com Lets You Quickly Find
$1 Billion Of Coins, Banknotes And Other Collectibles

(Newport Beach, California) — Imagine the convenience of finding every coin, banknote or other collectible item you want that is currently available for sale online, all in one place.  That place now is Collectors.com (www.Collectors.com), a new, one-stop website that instantly provides information on the availability of more than 9 million collectibles currently offered for sale.

“This is a fantastic new, easy-to-use tool to find virtually every online listing for collectible items you’re seeking.  You no longer have to endure time-consuming and scattered hunts on multiple websites,” explained David Hall, Founder and President of Collectors Universe, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLCT).

“As a collector myself, I was blown away by the speed and power of Collectors.com, which allows you to find collectibles using a wide range of filters including price, seller and condition.  If it’s out there, Collectors.com will help you find it,” Hall emphasized.

On its August 27, 2015 launch, Collectors.com was gathering information about collectibles for sale from more than 542 websites involving a total of 53,684 sellers.  These sellers and sites combined for a total of 9,241,446 collectibles with an incredible aggregate value of $1,015,588,542.

Collectors.com launched with aggregated collectibles listings for rare coins, paper money, trading cards, autographs and stamps.  The site plans on expanding to dozens of other popular collectibles categories with future rollouts.

Collectors.com was created because of the frustration collectors often face at having to individually visit and search through dozens of websites, one-at-a-time, to find collectibles.

Don Willis, President of the Professional Coin Grading Service division of Collectors Universe, explained the website’s origins:  “Everyone collects something.  As an avid collector, I used to spend hours every week searching websites and marketplaces for items I was collecting.  I tried using traditional search tools but they returned volumes of disorganized results that were not helpful in finding what I was searching for.  My searches were time consuming and typically ended in frustration.  The need for a collectibles aggregator was obvious.”

A view of the dedicated coins category on Collectors.com, a website where collectors can quickly find over $1 billion of collectibles offered for sale online.

“We assembled a superb technical team who, combined with the decades of collectibles experience found within Collectors Universe, Inc., created this unique value-added aggregator.  We have been beta testing Collectors.com for the past 8 months within the PCGS (coins) and PSA (cards) divisions of Collectors Universe Inc., and in the process of developing it we have discovered many new and exciting applications that will benefit both buyers and sellers.  Our goal is to add those applications as well as many more collectible categories as quickly as possible,” said Willis.

“Collectors.com does not buy or sell collectibles. It simply facilitates the meeting between the buyer and seller.  For the serious collector, Collectors.com is a powerful search tool which is actively monitoring the Internet.  For the merely curious, Collectors.com offers an exciting opportunity to discover items of potential interest.  For sellers, Collectors.com adds a new platform where thousands of potential buyers can easily find their coins and banknotes, and quickly link to their website for purchase,” he explained.

“Simply stated, the goal of Collectors.com is to list every collectible available anywhere in the world,” emphasized Willis.

An informative video that explains the simple-to-use Collectors.com system can be viewed on the home page, www.Collectors.com.

Collectors.com, patent pending, is a division of Collectors Universe, Inc. (NASDAQ:CLCT), the parent company of Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), among other leading collecting-based services.

Now you can see and even show your PCGS Set Registry® coins handsomely displayed in a customized album anytime, 24 hours a day, even if your prized coins are stored in a far-away bank vault or elsewhere.

Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com) has created the PCGS Digital Coin Album, a way for collectors to display and share their coin sets online in a beautiful format resembling a traditional coin album.  The new feature is free and easy to use.

“The PCGS Set Registry would not be possible without internet technology, and now we’ve used technology to take what we feel is the next giant step for PCGS Set Registry efficiency, fun, and enjoyment,” said BJ Searls, PCGS Set Registry and Special Projects Director.

“We’ve developed a way for you to create an elegant coin album which you can enjoy yourself or share with your friends anytime. You simply login to My Set Registry, visit one of your sets, and build the album with the images you have added to your set,” explained Searls.

You can choose from one of six different color palettes for each album and you can add your own set description to the cover.  Once you “publish” your album online, it is linked from your set in the Registry and can be downloaded and printed as a PDF file.  You can admire it anytime, anywhere online, and you can share it with other collectors on the PCGS Set Registry website and through other social media.

“This new digital approach combines the way we all used to collect with albums to house and display our coins with the technology of today.  This dramatically changes the way you can enjoy and display your sets.  In fact, your kids might even like it!,” said Searls.

The PCGS Set Registry (www.pcgs.com/setregistry) was established in 2001 and now hosts nearly 73,000 sets.  For additional information about PCGS and its services and the new PCGS Digital Coin Album, visit www.PCGS.com or call PCGS Customer Service at (800) 447-8848.
