Student loans, auto loans, home mortgages, and similar expenditures are major financial milestones—most people encounter one or more of them at some point in life. If you don’t have direct experience in these areas, you almost certainly know someone who does, and they can point you in the right direction.

Investing in coins or precious metals, on the other hand, is very different. If you aren’t already in the know, chances are your friends and relatives aren’t, either. Lack of information leaves people especially vulnerable to fraud, whether it’s malicious (as with counterfeit coins) or simply ignorant (overcharging for legitimate items… Full article at the source>

Gold, silver, and platinum have all gained in value during the past week, making it an apt time to look at recent trends in U.S. Mint bullion sales. Platinum in particular has been quite visible of late, with prices rising just as the Mint begins issuing its 2016 American Eagle one-ounce platinum bullion coins.

As noted on Monday, the Mint began accepting orders for bullion Platinum Eagles on July 25. Authorized purchasers (AP’s) scooped up an impressive 17,100 pieces in one day, giving this year’s one-ounce Platinum Eagles their fifth-highest mintage ever. The U.S. Mint opened sales of 2016 American Eagle One-Ounce Platinum Proof Coins today, a release that was met with enthusiasm from the Mint’s authorized purchasers (AP’s). According to the most recent bullion sales numbers, the Mint sold 17,100 Platinum Eagles today, quite a large total when considered alongside the total mintages for one-ounce Platinum Eagles from other years.

At 17,100 pieces sold, the 2016 bullion APE’s now have the fifth-highest mintage ever for these issues, which were initially issued in 1997. The first three years these coins were available — 1997, 1998, and 1999 — the… Full article at the source>

On May 26, as collectors waited to find out when the 2016-W Centennial Gold Standing Liberty Quarter and other highly-anticipated issues will launch this year, the Mint surprised everyone by announcing that the 2016-W $100 American Platinum Eagle Proof coin would be released on June 30.

Last year’s release in this popular series was not available until last December due to problems sourcing sufficient supplies of platinum planchets. But this year the Mint reported having fewer problems in that regard, though it is still not clear if there will be no one-ounce bullion coin for the second year in a row. Two-Year… Full article at the source>

I recently was reading an article by a chartist I have followed for quite some years. He has been right on the money, calling moves in both the stock market and the precious metals markets. If you care to check him out his name is Clive Maund. You can easily find him on the internet. In fact, I stole this headline from him.
Clive has warned investors of the big drop in the stock market and feels we could see another drop of as much as 2000 points.

U.S. Mint Platinum Coins Bypassed in Rush for Gold

By Debarati Roy.  Aug 21, 2014 (http://www.bloomberg.com/)

Five months after the U.S. Mint began producing coins made with platinum, sales have all but collapsed as investors continue to favor gold and silver.

“It’s not considered a currency,” said Jason Carstensen, a medical-sales representative in Ventura, California, who spends about $2,000 a month on coins. Gold and silver have value as hedges against a devaluation of the dollar, while platinum is viewed as an industrial commodity, he said.

American Platinum Eagle Bullion Coins Return

March 5, 2014 By Michael Zielinski (http://news.coinupdate.com/)

The United States Mint has resumed minting American Platinum Eagle bullion coins after more than a five year gap. Production had been suspended in late 2008 in order to devote additional resources to the production of gold and silver bullion coins.

The American Platinum Eagle was introduced in 1997, complementing the US Mint’s existing gold and silver bullion coin offerings. The platinum coins were struck in .9995 purity and available in one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce sizes carrying legal tender values of $100, $50, $25, and $10, respectively. Similar to other US Mint bullion products, the coins were distributed through a network of authorized purchasers.

The weekly United States Mint numismatic product sales report includes the latest figures for multiple 2012 and 2013 products which recently concluded sales. The first available numbers for multiple recently released products are also available.

In early December, the US Mint announced their “Last Chance” sale, which gave collectors their final opportunity to place orders for many 2012 and 2013 numismatic products. The products included the 2013 commemorative coins, 2012 First Spouse Gold Coins, 2012 Proof Platinum Eagle, and the 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set. Figures of note for the “Last Chance” products include the individual 2013 5-Star Generals Gold Coins, which show sales of 5,674 for the uncirculated version and 5,950 for the proof version. The proof coin was also included in the 3-Coin Proof Set with reported sales of 9,999 units. There has been significant secondary market price movement for these coins, which concluded sales at historically low levels.

Texas eliminates sales tax on precious metal coins

October 4, 2013 in Coins, Gold, Gold Bullion, Gold Coins, Investing, News, Platinum, Platinum Coins, Precious Metals, Silver, Silver Coins

andmark legislation, which went into effect Tuesday in Texas, completely eliminates all taxation of precious metals on the grounds that gold and silver can be considered a currency.

Author: Dorothy Kosich Oct, 2nd 2013 (http://www.mineweb.com)

As of October 1, the sales tax levied on purchases of gold, silver and platinum bullion and numismatic coins in Texas is now eliminated. It is the first time that a state has expanded an existing sales tax exemption for gold and silver.

Previously, Texans were paying 6.25% on all precious metals purchases under $1,000, a tax that was considered especially burdensome to small investors. Gov. Rick Perry signed H.B. 78 into law on June 14.

The legislation puts precious metals on a level playing field with other investments. Proponents of the legislation had asserted the exemption would attract coin shows, auctions and other events to Texas

July 18th, 2013 (From: http://www.artdaily.org)

DALLAS, TX.- There is no other coin in American numismatics with as storied and famous a history as the Class I 1804 $1, of which only eight exist, and Heritage Auctions will be offering the Mickley-Hawn-Queller specimen of the 1804 $1, graded PR62 by both PCGS and NGC, from The Greensboro Collection, Part IV, as the lead lot in its Platinum Night event on Friday, Aug. 9, the centerpiece of the company’s Aug. 8-10 U.S. Coins Signature® Auction in Rosemont, IL. “The Class I 1804 $1 is the undisputed King of American coins,” said Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auctions, “and it is always an event when one of them shows up for auction. It’s the rare chance for a top collector to add their name, or the name of their collection, to a history that will never diminish in importance. It is, in many ways, numismatic immortality for whoever comes out on top, and we expect there will be many vying for that honor.”

US Mint Sales Report: Gold Numismatic Products Broadly Slower

June 26, 2013 in Coins, Collecting, Gold, Gold Coins, Gold Eagles, News, Platinum, Platinum Coins, Precious Metals, Silver, Silver Coins, US Mint, USA Coins

June 25, 2013 By Michael Zielinski (http://news.coinupdate.com)

The sales levels for the United States Mint’s numismatic gold products were broadly slower in the latest weekly numismatic product sales report. The recently released 2013 Kennedy Half Dollar bags and rolls make their debut appearance.

For the weekly period ended June 23, 2013, 15 out of the 18 numismatic products containing gold or platinum coins had slower sales compared to the prior period. Of the remaining products, two showed an increase by single digit numbers and one was unchanged. The slow down is no doubt prompted by the sharp decline in the market price of precious metals which occurred during the week

The US Mint utilizes a flexible pricing policy for its gold and platinum numismatic products whereby prices may be adjusted as frequently as weekly in response to changes in the market prices of the underlying metals. Since the adoption of the policy, collectors have shown a tendency to time their purchases in order to take advantage of better pricing. As such, sales figures will often ebb and flow in response to precious metals prices. For the present period, many collectors may have delayed their purchases since a price decrease is expected to take place tomorrow.

What Metals and Materials are Used in US Coins and Banknotes?

January 25, 2013 in Coins, Copper Coins, Gold, Gold Coins, Platinum, Platinum Coins, Silver, Silver Coins, USA Coins

By Gary Thomas (http://www.azom.com)

History of Metal Coins in USA

The United States dollar (USD/US$) is also referred to as American dollar or the U.S. dollar. It is the official currency of the United States of America and its overseas territories. One American dollar is divided into 100 smaller units called cents.

Here is a brief look into the history of currency in the U.S.:

  • In 1781, Congress chartered the Bank of North America in Philadelphia as the first national bank. It was to support the financial operations of the fledgling government.
  • In 1785, Congress adopted the dollar as the monetary unit of the United States.
  • In 1792, the Coinage Act of 1792 created the U.S. Mint and established a federal monetary system with set denominations for coins, and specified the value of each coin in gold, silver, or copper.
  • In 1861, the federal government circulated the first paper money.

New York World Coin Auction realizes nearly $12 Million

January 12, 2013 in Ancient Coins, Auctions, Brazil Coins, Coins, Collecting, Gold, Gold Coins, Platinum Coins, USA Coins, World Coins

From Heritage Auctions (Collector news) (http://coins.ha.com)

Rare gold from around the world led the way as the Heritage Ancient & World Coin Signature Auction realized over $11.8 million overall January 6-7 in New York. All prices include a 17.5% Buyer’s Premium.

Taking top honors in this auction was a pattern gold Crown struck for Queen Victoria, graded Proof 64 Ultra Cameo, which sold for $235,000. This ultra-rare, undated piece was struck in 1887 in Nuremberg, Germany. The obverse was patterned after the famous William Wyon young head portrait of Victoria, while the reverse devices include the Order of the Garter crest supported by a crowned lion and a unicorn in chains. The designer of this piece is unverified, as the artist did not sign the dies for this piece.

Gold ingots from Brazil are extremely rare in private hands, and those with the original certificate, the Guia doubly so. A Brazilian ingot of Serro Frio, 1832, one of only 6-8 surviving ingots with Guia, sold for $188,000 in New York. This piece boasts a pedigree going back over 100 years and was likely one of the last such ingots struck, as research done by prominent Brazilian numismatist Kurt Prober lists a single 1833 example. The vast majority of Brazilian ingots reside in museums and institutions. Another Brazilian ingot, this one from Goias 1821, sold for $99,875.
