The following is a re-post from Mint News Blog’s sister site, Coin Update.

The U.S. Mint unveiled the reverse designs for the 2018 America the Beautiful quarters on August 1 at the American Numismatics Association’s World’s Fair of Money in Denver.

The national sites to be recognized in 2018 are Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Wisconsin, Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota, Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia, and Block Island National Wildlife Refuge in Rhode Island. Each quarter reverse in the series depicts a scenic representation of the park…  Full article at the source>

Here at Coin Update, we’re great fans of the blog “Past & Present,” which is operated by the Stamp & Coin Place. While higher-end collectors and investors mull the effects of today’s jobs report on gold prices—or of increases in Chinese manufacturing on silver prices, or of Tuesday’s election results on, well, just about everything—bread-and-butter collectors are eyeing humbler targets. On November 22 the Mint will release the America the Beautiful Quarters 2016 Circulating Coin set.

With the price of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar Centennial likely to be $915.00 or higher, the idea of a $5.95 product offering is somewhat refreshing. The coins have no bullion value and no particular numismatic value, barring the luck of an error coin slipping into Full article at the source>

On September 8, the U.S. Mint began accepting orders for the eagerly anticipated 2016-W Standing Liberty Centennial Gold Quarter, the second of three coins to mark the 100thanniversary of the very popular Liberty-themed coin series that began in 1916.

Unlike the previous coin in this trio, the 2016-W Winged Head Liberty Centennial Gold Dime that launched on April 21, the gold quarters had a household limit of one, and their mintage was set at a maximum of 100,000; the dimes had a household limit of ten and mintage limit of 125,000. Collecting on a Budget: Affordable Standing Liberty Quarters

The Standing Liberty quarter, originally produced from 1916 to 1930, is in the news this year thanks to the 100th anniversary of its introduction and the release of the centennial gold version from the United States Mint. It was intended to replace the Barber design with something more beautiful, and few collectors would argue that the issues introduced in 1916 are not among the most attractive circulation coinage America has ever produced. But collectors also know that the series has a few rare key-dates (such as the 1916) that are notoriously difficult to find in well-struck, Uncirculated condition… Full article at the source>

Mercury

Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) announced today that it is developing a full suite of attractive labels for 2016 coins commemorating classic designs by the U.S. Mint, featuring .9999 24-karat gold coins in the original size of the Winged Liberty dime, Standing Liberty quarter dollar, and Walking Liberty half dollar.

The Winged Liberty dime, designed by Adolph A. Weinman, includes an image of Liberty that often is mistaken for the Mercury, the Roman god, which is why the denomination is often called the Mercury dime. The gold issue of this coin will contain “AU,” symbol for gold, on the reverse. It… Full article at the source>

The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) met in Washington, D.C. today to discuss design candidates for the 2017 America the Beautiful quarters.

The Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Missouri inspired several strong designs, but the committee was uniformly enthusiastic about the “turtle” submission, described more than once as a “home run.” Both the sky and the white space surrounding the body of the turtle will look great with a mirror-like Proof finish, and the use of perspective — moving from underwater to the far tree-crowded horizon — will make for a compelling reverse. Prior to the actual sale, I wondered if it were possible for a sale with only 128 lots to have coins actually fly under the radar at the recent Pogue I sale, held in New York on May 19th. With the benefit of a week’s worth of hindsight, I’d say that the answer is yes.

Before I begin, I need to insert the following caveat. With an average lot value exceeding $150,000 the term “selling cheaply” is used with an epic grain of salt. The point I am trying to make in this blog is that at least half the coins… Full article at the source>

Collecting on a modest budget still offers thrills

May 23, 2014 in Cents, Coin Dealers, Coins, Collecting, Copper Coins, Education, Numismatica, Numismatics, Quarters, US Mint, USA Coins

The Gold and Silver Mine By: Douglas Keefe. May 21st 2014. (www.shorenews.com)

Collecting coins doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavor (remember, I said collecting, not investing). There are many opportunities to collect United States coins on a modest budget.

One examples is Lincoln Cents starting from 1959, the year the design on the reverse of the coin changed from having two wheat stalks framing the words “One Cent” to the new design featuring the Lincoln Memorial. Although the earlier design with the wheat stalks, which were minted from 1909 until 1958, have virtually disappeared from circulation, the cents with the Lincoln Memorial are plentiful. So if someone wanted to start collecting these cents, they could purchase one of those inexpensive blue coin albums that have holes for each date and mint and then start going through their coins to try to fill all the openings in the album.
