The Royal Australian Mint has issued a series of coins recalling the “convict love tokens” of the 18th and 19th centuries, which were given to families in England after loved ones were banished to Australia and elsewhere following criminal convictions.

The National Museum of Australia has the world’s largest collection of these pieces and provides the following overview of their historical context:

The Royal Australian Mint has launched three new collector coins celebrating September 9, 2015, the day Queen Elizabeth II will become the longest reigning British and Commonwealth monarch.

Australia is part of the Commonwealth of Nations and recognizes Elizabeth II as its official monarch. Queen Elizabeth II is also the only reigning Australian monarch to have visited the country since New South Wales was established as a British colony in 1788. The Royal Australian Mint will soon release a new commemorative coin which recognizes those who devoted their lives to manning and maintaining lighthouses in Australia and celebrates their contribution to a century of aids to navigation.

When the Commonwealth of Australia officially accepted responsibility for all landfall and coastal lights around Australia, it comprised of 167 lighthouses, 103 of which were manned. With the introduction of solar power, all off grid beacons were converted to electricity. From the 1980’s there was a concerted effort to automate the remaining 41 manned lighthouses. The task was completed on August 22, 1996.

The Royal Australian Mint has started accepting pre-orders for a range of new products which include gold and silver coins to celebrate the Year of the Goat as well as the latest releases in the Kangaroo Explorer’s First Sightings and Saltwater Crocodiles series.
