U.S. Mint sales report: Week ending July 16, 2017

July 20, 2017 in Coins, Collecting, Investing, News, Numismatica, Numismatics, Precious Metals, Silver, Silver Coins, Silver Eagles, US Mint, USA Coins

By: Coin Update News.CoinUpdate.com (Coin Update News)

This report covers the week ending July 16, 2017. The Mint had one new release during this sales period: the 2017 America the Beautiful–Ozark National Scenic Riverways 5-ounce silver Uncirculated coin (17AL). Released on July 11, it handily took the number-one-seller spot on this week’s report, with 13,740 units sold. Among the 5-ounce ATB Uncirculated coins, however, it had one of the weakest opening-week showings ever.

The 2017 American Eagle 1-ounce platinum Proof coin (17EJ)—last week‘s best seller—tumbled to seventh place, but it remains an interesting item. Limited to a mintage of 10,000, the coin was released on July 6… Full article at the source>

PCGS To Attribute Branch Mint Marks on Silver Eagles

UPDATE 4/7/2017 9:22AM PST: For 2014-2017 boxes that have a sticker on the side that includes the designation “WPM”, PCGS believes that these boxes, regardless of their serial number, originated in West Point. Therefore, at this time, and until we receive further clarification from the U.S. Mint, we will not be attributing such boxes to Philadelphia or San Francisco.

Acting upon the original documents provided to Coin World in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, Professional Coin Grading Service is pleased to announce that it will attribute certain 2014 through 2017 American Silver Eagles with a “mint mark” indicating where the coin was struck.

Officially, American Silver Eagles during this period were minted at the West Point Mint, and in fact, most American Silver Eagles were in fact struck at that branch. However, due to high demand, the U.S. Mint used the facilities in San Francisco and Philadelphia to augment the production of the West Point Mint.

Until now, the information about how many American Silver Eagles were made in each of the other branches has not been released to the public. Instead, the Mint’s figures officially reflected the total mintage, and listed those mintages as having been produced at West Point.

However, the FOIA documents reveal a method of identifying where a given box of Silver Eagles was minted. Following this method, PCGS will attribute coins from such boxes as having been produced at the branch mint at which it was made.

For example, a Silver Eagle minted in Philadelphia in 2015 would be attributed “2015-(P)”. The mintage figures, and how to identify them, are set forth in the tables below.

There is little doubt that modern U.S. numismatics needs a jolt. While millions of collectors still look forward to coins like each year’s American Silver and Gold Eagles and the forthcoming 2017 American Palladium Eagle, this segment of the hobby does not seem to attract as much interest as it used to. And nowhere is that more the case than with commemorative coin programs, whose sales have continued to lag in recent years mostly because collectors are not especially interested in either the subjects or the designs, with certain exceptions.

But there now is a possible commemorative coin program whose foundation… Full article at the source>

The U.S. Mint’s authorized purchasers (AP’s) bought 945,000 2016 American Eagle silver bullion coins last week, well up from 170,000 pieces sold during the previous period.

One-ounce Silver Eagles have sold 30,155,500 pieces so far this year. As we are currently 72% of the way through 2016 and sales for these issues have reached only 64% of last year’s total of 47 million ounces, ASE sales remain unlikely to reach last year’s total.

Gold’s value decreased by $10.80 an ounce during the past week. Gold is now appraised at $1,313.80 according to the London Bullion Market Association. The value… Full article at the source>

The screenshot above came in a search of “toned” and “monster” Silver Eagles on eBay. There were hundreds with “Buy It Now” prices ranging from $50 to $5,000.

This article tries to put the issue into perspective for those considering bidding or buying one of these coins. You may want to do so because of a unique pattern, for instance, or perhaps because you want at least one for your collection before they vanish. Or perhaps you are trying to build a set of toned Eagles.

Good toned examples are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Gold, silver, and platinum have all gained in value during the past week, making it an apt time to look at recent trends in U.S. Mint bullion sales. Platinum in particular has been quite visible of late, with prices rising just as the Mint begins issuing its 2016 American Eagle one-ounce platinum bullion coins.

As noted on Monday, the Mint began accepting orders for bullion Platinum Eagles on July 25. Authorized purchasers (AP’s) scooped up an impressive 17,100 pieces in one day, giving this year’s one-ounce Platinum Eagles their fifth-highest mintage ever. Today, the U.S. Mint stated that it has an inventory of 2,204,500 American Eagle silver bullion coins available for sale to its authorized purchasers (AP’s) this week. This is by far the largest weekly allocation of Silver Eagles we’ve seen the Mint offer this year, excepting the week of January 11, during which four million ounces of 2016-dated coins debuted following a four-week sales hiatus.

Although the Mint’s production of these issues has held steady and even increased in some cases, the larger allocation is mostly the result of the slackening sales numbers posted in… Full article at the source>

The U.S. Mint’s authorized buyers have purchased this week’s entire 1,036,000-ounce allocation of American Eagle Silver bullion coins in just three days, bringing this year’s overall sales total for the issues to 17,000,000 one-ounce coins sold.

This development is particularly striking as the Mint’s weekly allocations have not sold out in recent weeks, and it looked for a moment that the supply of Silver Eagles might finally be starting to outpace demand for the issues. But the value of silver has shown signs of strength this week, climbing to a near six-month high today at $15.98 an ounce, which Full article at the source>

Increase In Gold Price May Increase
Gold Scams, Cautions Michael Fuljenz

 Summary:

There are five things you must know about buying and selling gold to avoid paying too much or receiving too little, advises Universal Coin & Bullion President Michael Fuljenz, a member of the Professional Numismatists Guild’s Accredited Precious Metals Dealer program.

(Beaumont, Texas) — The recent increase in the price of gold may increase the chances of unwary buyers and sellers becoming victims of dishonest dealers, cautioned Michael Fuljenz, an award-winning precious metals writer and President of Universal Coin & Bullion, Ltd. (www.UniversalCoin.com) in Beaumont, Texas.

“It happens virtually every time there’s a run up in gold and silver prices.  Scam artists take advantage of investors and consumers who have not done their homework,” warned Fuljenz.

“Last year when prices dropped, there was still so much public demand that the United States Mint ran out of some bullion coins inventory several times.  I anticipate demand will rise even higher from 2015’s impressive levels.  Investors should know how to get more value when buying and more money when selling,” Fuljenz stated.

He said there are five danger points to avoid:

  • Paying far too much when you purchase new, popular gold bullion items, such as American Eagle and Canadian Maple Leaf coins. Depending on the quantity of your purchase, Fuljenz advised you should only pay between 4.5 and 5.5 percent over the intrinsic (“melt”) value of a typical, one-ounce gold bullion coin.  Premiums above melt value may reach as high as 14 percent when purchasing smaller-size bullion coins that contain only one-tenth of an ounce of gold.
  • Receiving far too little when you sell.  Depending on the quantity and quality of coins you are selling, you should receive as least melt value for popular, one-ounce gold bullion coins and usually significantly over intrinsic value for rare coins.  Several years ago, Fuljenz assisted news media in five states with investigations of so-called ‘hotel buyers’ who often paid just pennies on the dollar for some precious metals items.  In one case, a high-profile buyer offered only $60 for a gold coin with a market value of $10,000 that Fuljenz loaned to investigative reporters who worked on the stories.
  • Not receiving what you paid for.  Fuljenz pointed out there have been recent news media stories in Orange County California and Austin, Texas about precious metals dealers failing to deliver the gold bullion coins investors ordered in good faith.
  • Not receiving payment for precious metals items you shipped to a buyer.  “Before you buy or sell with a dealer, check to see the dealers’ credentials.  Are they accredited by the Better Business Bureau?  Are they truly experts, such as being a member of the Professional Numismatists Guild’s Accredited Precious Metals Dealer (APMD) program,” advised Fuljenz.
  • Beware of counterfeit American Eagle gold and silver coins and fake bullion ingots (bars).  “Even though hobby protection laws have been strengthened and counterfeit detection efforts in the precious metals and rare coin profession have increased, it pays to make sure your specific dealer is an expert in counterfeit detection,” said Fuljenz.

Bullion sales have been strong during the first weeks of 2016, though the numbers have normalized a bit since the week of January 11, which kicked off the new year with a bang. American Eagle Silver bullion coins have already sold 5,727,000 ounces this month, more than any month in 2015. That’s also within 63,000 pieces of 2014’s highest monthly total (5,790,000), a number that is likely to be surpassed tomorrow.

Being as 2014 and 2015 have the two highest-ever sales totals for Silver Eagle bullion coins, this January’s running start does seem to point to another pinnacle year… Full article at the source>

Sales of 2015 American Eagle Silver bullion coins have broken last year’s record of 44,006,000 ounces sold in a single year. As of this writing, the Mint lists total sales for 2015 ASE bullion coins at 44,666,500 ounces.

Demand for American Eagle Silver bullion coins has picked up again after a brief lull, and the total weekly allocation for the issues has been claimed by buyers during each of the last three weeks. The U.S. Mint has allocated 1,043,500 ounces of American Eagle Silver bullion coins for sale this week, an increase of 73,500 over last week’s figure.

American Eagle Silver bullion coins are selling at a record pace this year. A total of 38,986,000 have been sold already in 2015, and last year’s all-time… Full article at the source>
