By: Scott Barman Coin Collectors Blog (CoinsBlog.ws)

Sometimes, I find it difficult to keep an open mind with some of the non-circulating legal tender (NCLT) coins that are on the market. Some of the themes have started as interesting ideas have turned into blatant commercialism that I am not sure how to interpret its benefits to the hobby. From superheroes to movie […] Full article at the source>

Coingrader “fails”

November 16, 2017 in Auctions, Coins, Collecting, Education, Investing, News, Numismatica, Numismatics, Opinion, PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service), Photography, Silver, Silver Coins, USA Coins

By: Michael Bugeja News.CoinUpdate.com (Coin Update News)

Too often numismatic writers give the impression that they always win in online auctions, but all of them will fail on occasion, including me. That is what this post is about. Perhaps my examples here might inform you about issues that often result in cleaned or damaged coins after they are sent in for holdering.

Sometimes, in my view, the holdering company gets it wrong, as I wrote about earlier in the article, “Resubmitting or Living with Grades.”

Following the initial release of 2,891 documents previously withheld by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) relating to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on Thursday, October 19, the Internet went up in storm. While many are satisfied with this initial release of documents regarding the president’s assassination, the international non-profit transparency group WikiLeaks is offering a $100,000 reward for the remainder of the withheld documents, with founder Julian Assange calling President Trump’s delay on the 25-year-planned full release “inexcusable.” As an interesting example of cosmic irony, 2017 also happens to be the centenary anniversary of President Kennedy’s… Full article at the source>

Washington, DC (October 29, 2017) — Congressmen Alex Mooney (R-WV) and Frank Lucas (R-OK) delivered a formal letter to the United States Mint and the Secret Service on Friday, urging aggressive action on the growing problem of high-quality counterfeits of U.S. precious-metals coins entering the country from China and elsewhere.

“Enclosed herewith is a 1995 1-ounce gold American eagle coin, carrying a face value $50 and ostensibly minted by the U.S. Mint,” Mooney and Lucas wrote. “You are free to keep it, as it’s a worthless tungsten fake.”

Since 1982, gains made on precious-metals bullion have been taxed at the ordinary income rate due to language defining such bullion as a “collectible.” Congress has made numerous attempts to… Full article at the source>

This report covers the week ending July 16, 2017. The Mint had one new release during this sales period: the 2017 America the Beautiful–Ozark National Scenic Riverways 5-ounce silver Uncirculated coin (17AL). Released on July 11, it handily took the number-one-seller spot on this week’s report, with 13,740 units sold. Among the 5-ounce ATB Uncirculated coins, however, it had one of the weakest opening-week showings ever.

The 2017 American Eagle 1-ounce platinum Proof coin (17EJ)—last week‘s best seller—tumbled to seventh place, but it remains an interesting item. Limited to a mintage of 10,000, the coin was released on July 6… Full article at the source>

The Monnaie de Paris have unveiled a new series of coins which features one of Walt Disney Studios’ most engaging cartoon characters: Scrooge McDuck. The irrepressible duck with his affectation of a broad Scottish brogue has been part of the world of Disney now for 70 years.

Initially inspired by the Charles Dickens classic novel A Christmas Carol and its primary antagonist, Ebenezer Scrooge, Carl Barks came up with the quintessentially stodgy but lovable Scrooge McDuck in 1947. Ibex Coins, on behalf of the Republic of Chad, has released the first of an intriguing new series of high-relief silver coins called “Gargoyles and Grotesques.” The subjects, as the name suggests, are those strange and fantastical creatures that have decorated buildings since ancient times, peering from the peaks of gothic windows, crouching on rooftops, and scaring away evil spirits. A specific type of grotesque, the gargoyle, has an architectural purpose: it serves as a downspout, directing rainwater away from the sides of a building.
