The 21st World Cup tournament was awarded to the host country of Russia in December 2010. On July 18, the Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre – Casa Real de la Moneda will issue a new collector coin celebrating the 300th anniversary of the establishment of Spain’s postal service.

Granted by Royal Warrant of King Philip V on July 13, 1716, the system was implemented to deliver the King’s orders and diplomatic dispatches, which included his personal correspondences as well as government payments and monies. With a slight breeze riffling the water, twelve ships set sail from Havana. Eleven were bound for Spain, loaded with gold and silver. Among them were the flagship Capitana and Urca de Lima. The twelfth ship was the Griffon, a French merchant vessel that had been detained in port. Afraid that word would leak of the treasure they were carrying—making the Spanish fleet easy prey for pirates—the Spaniards brought the Griffon with them.

Spain coin 70 years of peace caused controversy

A Spain coin commemorates “70 years of peace in Europe” and showing the face of King Felipe VI has caused controversy because critics note that in Spain, the last 70 years includes the Francisco Franco dictatorship.
What’s more, the motto has echoes of the one the dictator himself used to celebrate “25 years of peace” following the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).

The coin obverse bears portrait of King Felipe VI. The reverse features the stylized image of a a dove holding a branch of an olive tree in its beak, as a universal symbol of peace with inscription “70 YEARS OF PEACE”.
