Sometimes, I find it difficult to keep an open mind with some of the non-circulating legal tender (NCLT) coins that are on the market. Some of the themes have started as interesting ideas have turned into blatant commercialism that I am not sure how to interpret its benefits to the hobby. From superheroes to movie […] Full article at the source>

Yesterday, the coin-collecting hobby got an update for the next generation: Lookzee. The app takes advantage of an iPhone’s camera to take an image of a collector’s coin, which is then cross-referenced against a database built from thousands of coins sorted by Tim Rathjen’s revolutionary “Machine.” After analyzing the collector’s coin, Lookzee provides its denomination, type, and year of issue. The app also provides a broad estimate of the coin’s worth as well. A video of the app in action is available on Lookzee’s official Facebook page, and while the only version available at the moment is for… Full article at the source>

As I peruse the Interwebs for numismatic-related stories from non-numismatic sources, my searches are inundated with stories about Bitcoin, crypto-currencies, and blockchains. Most of the time, the stories are just noise given my objective to find information relevant to collectors including the issuance of circulating currencies and the impact of precious metals on the market. The Royal Canadian Mint has created two unique coins they call “Nocturnal by Nature” that would fit the theme of Halloween. The first coin’s reverse, which is sold out, features a barn […] Full article at the source>

By: Scott Barman Coin Collectors Blog (CoinsBlog.ws)

Twelve years ago, when I went looking for numismatic information online, there were a few resources. The major numismatic publications had not fully embraced the online world and writing about numismatics strictly from the collector’s point of view was non-existent. I took a chance and started writing my own blog. On October 29, 2005, I […] Full article at the source>

The government and treasury of the Falkland Islands have issued (9th October) a new set of crown coins which mark the centenary anniversary of the establishment of the British Royal House. The Royal House came about due to the circumstances just after the fighting for the Great War began (1914–1918).

September 8, 2017 in Coins, Collecting, Counterfeit, Education, Fake Coins, History, News, Numismatic Crimes, Numismatica, Numismatics, USA Coins, World Coins

By: Coin Update News.CoinUpdate.com (Coin Update News)

Dogs are renowned for their almost supernatural sense of smell and have been used for years by law enforcement to solve some of the most complicated crimes ranging from drug smuggling to cold-blooded murder. In 1997, the world was introduced to the first counterfeit-sniffing dog, named Mike, and the concept has rapidly gained popularity ever since. The excerpt below, which is from the Stamp & Coin Place’s “Past and Present” blog, explores this powerful tool in the war on counterfeit currency.

On February 16, 2018, we will be welcoming the Chinese New Year, and it turns out that—appropriately—2018 will be the… Full article at the source>

Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire…

September 2, 2017 in Ancient Coins, Archaeology, Art, Blogs, Coins, Collecting, Education, History, Investing, Legal, Legislation, Numismatica, Numismatics, Opinion, Politics, Rare Coins, World Coins

By: Wayne G. Sayles  Ancient Coin Collecting (Wayne G. Sayles)

The Committee for Cultural Policy has pointed out on several past occasions that exaggerated media reports, of Islamic State (ISIS) income from the sale of looted antiquities to art and coin collecting communities, are and have from the start been unfounded. The persistence of outright lies has cast a cloud over the credibility of several major media outlets and their academic “experts” who fed the flame for what is obviously an ideological anti-trade agenda. In their August 2017 newsletter, the CCP presents a report on the findings of a Dutch National Police investigation that flatly debunks… Full article at the source>

This week, the BBC reported about Toby Robyns, a 52-year-old ambulance driver from the U.K., who may be facing an up to three-year prison sentence for trying to take home ancient coins he found on a beach in Turkey. Immediately, my thoughts turned to a story I wrote about my friends in a similar situation. […]

In my nearly 12 years of writing this blog and occasionally delving into the reasons for the fluctuating prices of precious metals and their impact on the numismatic market, there have been some fundamentals that have driven that market. A sign of the times?

August 20, 2017 in Ancient Coins, Antique Coins, Archaeology, Blogs, Coin Dealers, Collecting, Education, Foreign Policy, History, Investing, Legal, Legislation, Numismatica, Numismatics, Opinion, Rare Coins, World Coins

By: Wayne G. Sayles Ancient Coin Collecting (Wayne G. Sayles)

Over the past decade, collectors of ancient coins have been faced with constant pressure from left wing radicals of academia—particularly the archaeological community leadership and their sycophants. Among the ardent supporters of anti-collector groups are a small but well entrenched cadre of bureaucrats in Washington. The level of governmental infiltration by these cultural property nationalists—bent on eliminating or controlling international trade in cultural property—is in itself cause for some concern. History is replete with examples of ideology supplanting law and individual rights in a quest for social management. It has been the cause of more than… Full article at the source>

The reasons why counterfeiters are successful is that people do not pay attention. Even when people do allegedly pay attention, it is almost as if the brain is not engaging. Ancient Romans used to measure time by the position of the stars. One of the stars they observed was Sirius because it was the brightest star in the sky. During their observations, they found that starting about 20 days prior to its apex and 20 days that follow, the temperatures would be its hottest. This […] Full article at the source>
