The Bank of Israel has issued three new coins which mark the 60th anniversary of the Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem. Literally meaning “a memorial and a name” Yad Vashem is a pioneer of Holocaust Museums worldwide. It is the Jewish people’s living memorial to the Holocaust, dedicated to the memory of the past and imparting its meaning for future generations.

Established in 1953 by the Israeli Knesset or parliament as the world center for documentation, research, education and commemoration of the Holocaust, Yad Vashem is today a dynamic and vital place of intergenerational and international encounter, visited by nearly a million people each year and all world leaders on their official visits to Israel. The Pages of Testimony in the Memorial Repository have recently been included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. In sixty years, 2.6 million names have been documented by Yad Vashem on Pages of Testimony, which together with other documentation have allowed the identify so far by name, the 4.2 million out of the 6 million victims of the Holocaust. The Pages of Testimony Memorial Repository is housed in the Hall of Names at Yad Vashem.
