PCGS CoinFacts™ President Ron Guth Named Numismatist of the Year: What Makes Ron Run?

Ron Guth has been named 2014 Numismatist of the Year.

Ron Guth has been named 2014 Numismatist of the Year.

The American Numismatic Association’s 2014 Numismatist of the Year is PCGS CoinFacts™ President, award-winning author, researcher, educator and all-around good guy Ron Guth.

“There is no one more deserving of this recognition than Ron.  His contributions to the hobby and profession are far-reaching and wide-ranging.  He shares his knowledge and numismatic goodwill through books, educational seminars, and of course, through the tremendous expansion of PCGS CoinFacts under his leadership the past six years,” stated David Hall, President of Collectors Universe, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLCT), the parent company of PCGS CoinFacts.

Guth began collecting coins in 1964 when the numismatic market was booming and much of the focus was on collecting coins by the roll.  While his U.S. and world numismatic interests are extensive, these days Guth personally specializes in an area of coins that usually are not available in roll quantities: Bavarian “Madonna” Thalers issued from 1753 to the end of the 18th century.

He served as President of Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com) from 2005 to 2008.  He then became President of PCGS CoinFacts.com (www.PCGSCoinFacts.com) in 2008 and has guided its growth to become the Internet’s most comprehensive resource for information about United States coins.

“According to our statistics, we now have pages for 33,483 coins with over 5,171 individual coin narratives,” said Guth.

“The growth of PCGS CoinFacts is primarily a function of the new additions in our grading division.  New additions include die varieties, certain medals and tokens, and plus grades.  As new services are developed, they begin to show up on PCGS CoinFacts,” he explained.

“I’m particularly proud of the Condition Census information we offer in areas that are underdeveloped or unavailable in the market, such as U.S. Patterns, California Fractional Gold, and Territorial Gold.  Also, we cover all major rarities with updated census information.”

Guth has authored or co-authored nearly a dozen books on United States and German coins, and yet another is on the horizon.

“I’m currently working on a book with broad market appeal, but the title and contents are secret for now,” he hinted.

Guth will receive the Numismatist of the Year award at the ANA 2014 World’s Fair of MoneySM (www.worldsfairofmoney.com) banquet on Friday, August 8, in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois.
