Mirror, Mirror was one of the most memorable and influential episodes from Star Trek: The Original Series.

Its fascination lay in the provocative concept of parallel universes. After all, many of us have wondered at one time or another whether humans can co-exist in parallel worlds. Half a century after Mirror, Mirror aired for the first time in 1967, Australian scientists proposed that parallel universes really exist, and that they interact!

The iconic episode opened with Kirk, McCoy, Uhura and Scott failing to secure a supply of dilithium crystals, essential for warp drive engines, from a humanoid race… Full article at the source>

The Battle of the Somme refers to a series of battles that took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916, during the First World War, in which more than 1 million men from both sides of No Man’s Land were wounded or killed. During the battles, the British and French armies fought against German troops alongside in the Somme region of northern France in an effort to break the deadlock of trench warfare and restore the fighting to fluid, mobile warfare.

1788Medallion

The 11 ships of the First Fleet set sail from Portsmouth, England on 13 May 1787. Aboard were more than 1,300 colonists, including approximately 730 male and female convicts from Britain’s overcrowded prisons. The expedition was under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip, who had accepted instructions from the British Home Secretary, Lord Sydney, to establish Britain’s first colony in Australia.

The ships began arriving in Botany Bay on 18 January 1788, which 17 years earlier had been charted by Lieutenant James Cook. Despite Cook’s indication that the land was suitable for cultivation, Phillip quickly determined that the area would not… Full article at the source>

Much like dragons, bats have contrasting significance in Eastern and Western cultures. While people of European descent generally associate bats with evil, darkness and demonic creatures, the Chinese view them as auspicious.

For centuries, images of bats have been used to decorate Oriental art and daily wares, from furniture, paintings and embroideries, to vases and eating utensils. Bats are also depicted in architectural decorations on doors, windows and roofs.

An explanation lies in Chinese ‘homonyms’ – written or printed characters which differ in appearance and meaning but share the same pronunciation. In this case, the Chinese for bat (fu 蝠) sounds identical… Full article at the source>

RedbackSpider_Shipper

The list of Australia’s most hazardous inhabitants invariably includes the Redback spider.

A relative of the Black Widow, this angry arachnid was responsible for at least 14 human deaths before the availability of anti-venom.

The problem with Redbacks is that unlike deadly sharks, crocs and brown snakes, they prefer the comforts of urban living. The average suburban block provides plenty of nooks and crannies just perfect for a Redback residency.

Around sheds, under garden furniture, in the letterbox – you name it, a Redback is probably sizing up its potential new abode. So happy are they to dwell in dilapidated dunnies that Redbacks… Full article at the source>

World record price for rare Australian ‘Holey Dollar’

March 7, 2013 in Antique Coins, Australian Coins, Coins, Collecting, History, News, Precious Metals, Silver, Silver Coins, World Coins

Agence France-Presse March 5, 2013 (http://www.globalpost.com)

A private collector has paid a world record Aus$495,000 (US$508,000) for one of Australia’s first coins, known as the “Holey Dollar”, auctioneers said Wednesday.

Only 300 of the coins survive and Belinda Downie, managing director of Melbourne dealer Coinworks, said the one that sold this week was the finest example.
