Austria: Latest coin in popular Silver Niobium series rolls out in June

On June 7, 2017, the Austrian Mint will release “Mikrokosmos” (Microcosm), the newest in its extremely popular Silver Niobium series. Inaugurated in 2003, the bimetallic €25 coins have consistently sold out at the mint, and all—especially the first few issues—have gained value on the secondary market.

Each year’s issue is composed of a disc of niobium surrounded by a .900 silver outer ring. The brilliant colors of the disc are achieved by anodic oxidation—a precisely controlled electrochemical process that deposits a fine layer of oxidized niobium on the surface of the disc. The Austrian Mint has announced that on September 9 it will issue the first of three silver coins dedicated to the life and work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The series, titled, “Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, A Life in Three Acts,” will celebrate a distinct aspect of the composer’s persona with each release. The first coin is named Wolfgang: The Wunderkind, while the second and third releases, respectively due out in 2016 and 2017, will be called Amadeus: The Genius and Mozart: The Legend.
