John F. Kennedy commemorative coin bills introduced

July 28, 2017 in Coins, Collecting, Commemorative, Education, History, Legislation, News, Numismatica, Numismatics, US Government, US Mint, USA Coins

By: Coin Update News.CoinUpdate.com (Coin Update News)

On July 17, companion bills were introduced in the House and Senate authorizing production of commemorative coins to honor the birth centennial of President John F. Kennedy. Since last year (and even earlier), collectors have been watching for a blip on the legislative radar that would signal plans for a Kennedy commemorative; as each month passed with nothing to authorize such a program, they became increasingly vocal in their disapproval. Once Kennedy’s 100th birthday (May 29) was in the rearview mirror, most of the complaints gave way to an unhappy sense of resignation.

The oversight has been all the more glaring… Full article at the source>

By: Coin Update News.CoinUpdate.com (Coin Update News)

This report covers the week ending July 16, 2017. The Mint had one new release during this sales period: the 2017 America the Beautiful–Ozark National Scenic Riverways 5-ounce silver Uncirculated coin (17AL). Released on July 11, it handily took the number-one-seller spot on this week’s report, with 13,740 units sold. Among the 5-ounce ATB Uncirculated coins, however, it had one of the weakest opening-week showings ever.

The 2017 American Eagle 1-ounce platinum Proof coin (17EJ)—last week‘s best seller—tumbled to seventh place, but it remains an interesting item. Limited to a mintage of 10,000, the coin was released on July 6… Full article at the source>

There’s a fake in the latest catalog of a respected auction house—and the owner knows it.

Dr. Hubert Lanz, of the respected Munich coin company Numismatik Lanz, has long been a champion of collectors, whose many hazards include the issue of counterfeit coins. As Numismatik Lanz is celebrating its 70th year of operation, Dr. Lanz came up with a clever idea to promote the company and highlight the danger of fraud in numismatics: He placed a fake in catalog number 164, and announced that anyone who identified the fake would receive a €25 credit toward their purchase in the auction.

Sunday is Mother’s Day. In the world of U.S. coins and paper money, there’s not much to look at with respect to such a holiday. We do, however, have an extremely popular first president who has appeared on coins, tokens, medals, paper money, and nearly every kind of financial product that can be stamped or printed—namely, George Washington. And as it happens, his journey to the status of Founding Father was strongly influenced by one of the most epic presidential mothers of all time: Mary Ball Washington.

Austria: Latest coin in popular Silver Niobium series rolls out in June

By: Coin Update News.CoinUpdate.com (Coin Update News)

On June 7, 2017, the Austrian Mint will release “Mikrokosmos” (Microcosm), the newest in its extremely popular Silver Niobium series. Inaugurated in 2003, the bimetallic €25 coins have consistently sold out at the mint, and all—especially the first few issues—have gained value on the secondary market.

Each year’s issue is composed of a disc of niobium surrounded by a .900 silver outer ring. The brilliant colors of the disc are achieved by anodic oxidation—a precisely controlled electrochemical process that deposits a fine layer of oxidized niobium on the surface of the disc. The color is determined by the thickness of… Full article at the source>

New to gold investing? The FTC has these tips

March 24, 2017 in Bullion, Coins, Collecting, Education, Gold, Gold Bullion, Investing, IRA, News, Numismatica, Numismatics, Opinion, Precious Metals, US Government

By: Coin Update News.CoinUpdate.com (Coin Update News)

“Police say two Bend teens made more than $50,000 selling fake bars of gold.” That’s the headline in today’s Register-Guard, a newspaper in Eugene, Oregon. It seems the two budding criminals got hold of fake, 1-ounce gold bars purported to be from the Perth Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint, in seemingly official, tamper-proof packaging. Then they went on Craigslist and connected with potential buyers. The unscrupulous juveniles rooked at least three adults—including an experienced coin dealer, who bought the majority of their stock* from individuals who’d purchased it directly from the teens.

This story seemed like a good intro… Full article at the source>

Student loans, auto loans, home mortgages, and similar expenditures are major financial milestones—most people encounter one or more of them at some point in life. If you don’t have direct experience in these areas, you almost certainly know someone who does, and they can point you in the right direction.

Investing in coins or precious metals, on the other hand, is very different. If you aren’t already in the know, chances are your friends and relatives aren’t, either. Lack of information leaves people especially vulnerable to fraud, whether it’s malicious (as with counterfeit coins) or simply ignorant (overcharging for legitimate items… Full article at the source>

Amid the various U.S. Mint releases spread across the last quarter of the year—not to mention the general circus of election season—one could easily miss the fact that this is World Space Week. The United Nations declared October 4–10 to be Space Week in December 1999. From now through next Monday, events around the world are celebrating “the benefits of space and excitement about space exploration.” (Click here for event highlights.)

None of this might seem relevant to coin collecting, but the U.S. Mint has provided a guide to “its long connection to the space program” in connection with… Full article at the source>

When things go south, invest in gold. When things go south of south, invest in . . . manufacturers of home safes?

The Wall Street Journal has reported on a surprising trend in Germany and elsewhere: faced with negative interest rates in the eurozone, banks are beginning to charge interest on deposits. And their customers are beginning to withdraw their cash from the banks and take it home.

Of course, they’re not exactly stashing it out back in a coffee can, like some eccentric neighbor who still uses a rotary phone and hides canned goods under the bed. They’re putting… Full article at the source>
