The National Bank of Ukraine have issued (22nd March) a new coin in celebration of Ukraine’s first declaration of statehood, which occurred in the wake of the dissolution of the Russian Empire in 1917. Events surrounding the abdication of Czar Nicholas II on the 15th March 1917 resulted in the initial declaration of independence in the spring of 1917, but this declaration would be followed by a civil conflict and a short-lived duration of statehood.

Thailand’s Department of the Treasury and the Royal Thai Mint have unveiled new commemorative coins featuring the Thai elephant, a proud national symbol of Thailand and a species indigenous to Southeast Asia.

The coin’s design was unveiled on February 5 during the opening day of the World Money Fair in Berlin. The actual plaster sculptures went on display at the Royal Thai Mint booth, along with the coins themselves, allowing interested collectors to inspect them up close. The Royal Canadian Mint has issued its first concave coin in celebration of the 140th anniversary of Canada’s Library of Parliament. This ultra high relief issue is 99.99% silver, weighs 30.75 grams (an ounce is about 28.35 grams), and has a mintage limited to 6,000 coins. It has been given a purchase price of $159.95.

The U.S. Mint has delayed the release of the 2016 Mark Twain Commemorative Silver Coins, originally scheduled to launch on January 14, the same day as the gold Twain commemoratives. Now the silver issues are expected to go on sale two weeks later on Wednesday, January 27, along with rolls, bags, and boxes of the 2016 Native American $1 coin.

Michael White of the Mint’s Office of Corporate Communications told Mint News Blog that the Mint simply wants to ensure there is enough inventory on hand to handle the launch.
