A brand-new numismatic coin, issued by the Central Bank of Malta, pays homage to a very old symbol: the Maltese Cross.

The origins of the eight-pointed emblem reach back to the 6th century, when it appeared as an ornamental feature in Byzantine art and architecture. It was adopted in the late 15th century as a symbol of the Order of the Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem (the “Knights Hospitaller”)—a Catholic military order that ministered to the pilgrims to the Holy Land. The order provided shelter, medicine, and eventually armed escort. The eight points of the cross were… Full article at the source>

Gold, silver, and platinum have all gained in value during the past week, making it an apt time to look at recent trends in U.S. Mint bullion sales. Platinum in particular has been quite visible of late, with prices rising just as the Mint begins issuing its 2016 American Eagle one-ounce platinum bullion coins.

As noted on Monday, the Mint began accepting orders for bullion Platinum Eagles on July 25. Authorized purchasers (AP’s) scooped up an impressive 17,100 pieces in one day, giving this year’s one-ounce Platinum Eagles their fifth-highest mintage ever. The U.S. Mint opened sales of 2016 American Eagle One-Ounce Platinum Proof Coins today, a release that was met with enthusiasm from the Mint’s authorized purchasers (AP’s). According to the most recent bullion sales numbers, the Mint sold 17,100 Platinum Eagles today, quite a large total when considered alongside the total mintages for one-ounce Platinum Eagles from other years.

At 17,100 pieces sold, the 2016 bullion APE’s now have the fifth-highest mintage ever for these issues, which were initially issued in 1997. The first three years these coins were available — 1997, 1998, and 1999 — the… Full article at the source>

The U.S. Mint’s authorized purchasers (AP’s) bought 250,000 of last week‘s 2,839,500-ounce allocation of 2016 American Eagle silver bullion coins, leaving 2,589,500 unsold. This is the most unsold Silver Eagles we’ve seen so far this year, continuing a recent trend that has seen the Mint’s inventory growing with the help of consistent production and softer demand.

Sales for the issues dropped sharply, due in part to the observance of the Fourth of July holiday. AP’s bought 73% fewer Silver Eagles during this period than the 938,000 ounces reported last week. The unsold pieces have been added to this week’s… Full article at the source>

The U.S. Mint’s first-week sales totals for the 2016 Nancy Reagan First Spouse Gold Coins show that interest in the issues has been higher than we’ve seen for most other recent releases in this series. The Proof version of the coin sold 1,428 pieces between Friday, July 1, and Monday, July 4, while the Uncirculated coin saw 792 orders placed. That means the Reagan coins tied 2015’s Lady Bird Johnson issues for the second-biggest First Spouse debut in recent memory, with the Kennedy coins still significantly higher.

A new commemorative coin program memorializing the 30th anniversary of the space shuttle Challenger disaster has been proposed by United States Senators Kelly Ayotte and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire. It would particularly highlight the legacy of Christa McAuliffe, a high school social studies teacher and mother of two who was chosen to join the expedition as the “first teacher in space.”

McAuliffe and six other astronauts were killed after the Challenger exploded shortly after launching from the coast of Florida on January 28, 1986. Due in part to the significant media attention attracted by McAuliffe’s participation in the mission,… Full article at the source>
