PCGS To Attribute Branch Mint Marks on Silver Eagles

UPDATE 4/7/2017 9:22AM PST: For 2014-2017 boxes that have a sticker on the side that includes the designation “WPM”, PCGS believes that these boxes, regardless of their serial number, originated in West Point. Therefore, at this time, and until we receive further clarification from the U.S. Mint, we will not be attributing such boxes to Philadelphia or San Francisco.

Acting upon the original documents provided to Coin World in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, Professional Coin Grading Service is pleased to announce that it will attribute certain 2014 through 2017 American Silver Eagles with a “mint mark” indicating where the coin was struck.

Officially, American Silver Eagles during this period were minted at the West Point Mint, and in fact, most American Silver Eagles were in fact struck at that branch. However, due to high demand, the U.S. Mint used the facilities in San Francisco and Philadelphia to augment the production of the West Point Mint.

Until now, the information about how many American Silver Eagles were made in each of the other branches has not been released to the public. Instead, the Mint’s figures officially reflected the total mintage, and listed those mintages as having been produced at West Point.

However, the FOIA documents reveal a method of identifying where a given box of Silver Eagles was minted. Following this method, PCGS will attribute coins from such boxes as having been produced at the branch mint at which it was made.

For example, a Silver Eagle minted in Philadelphia in 2015 would be attributed “2015-(P)”. The mintage figures, and how to identify them, are set forth in the tables below.

Editor’s Note: PCGS is continuing to research this matter. Collectors may get their kicks with Route 66 coins

There is little doubt that modern U.S. numismatics needs a jolt. While millions of collectors still look forward to coins like each year’s American Silver and Gold Eagles and the forthcoming 2017 American Palladium Eagle, this segment of the hobby does not seem to attract as much interest as it used to. And nowhere is that more the case than with commemorative coin programs, whose sales have continued to lag in recent years mostly because collectors are not especially interested in either the subjects or the designs, with certain exceptions.

But there now is a possible commemorative coin program whose foundation… Full article at the source>

The screenshot above came in a search of “toned” and “monster” Silver Eagles on eBay. There were hundreds with “Buy It Now” prices ranging from $50 to $5,000.

This article tries to put the issue into perspective for those considering bidding or buying one of these coins. You may want to do so because of a unique pattern, for instance, or perhaps because you want at least one for your collection before they vanish. Or perhaps you are trying to build a set of toned Eagles.

Good toned examples are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Today, the U.S. Mint stated that it has an inventory of 2,204,500 American Eagle silver bullion coins available for sale to its authorized purchasers (AP’s) this week. This is by far the largest weekly allocation of Silver Eagles we’ve seen the Mint offer this year, excepting the week of January 11, during which four million ounces of 2016-dated coins debuted following a four-week sales hiatus.

Although the Mint’s production of these issues has held steady and even increased in some cases, the larger allocation is mostly the result of the slackening sales numbers posted in… Full article at the source>

There have been some significant milestones for U.S. Mint bullion sales today. The Mint may be having trouble keeping some of its gold and Uncirculated collector coins in stock, but it’s had so such problems providing huge amounts of investor strikes to voracious authorized purchasers.

The Mint sold out this week’s allocation of 1,073,500 ounces of American Eagle Silver bullion coins today, bringing the overall total for 2016 to 10 million coins sold. Considering the fact that the all-time sales record for the issues reached 47,000,000 ounces last year, 10 million is an impressive total to reach… Full article at the source>

After a huge opening last week, during which the Mint sold four million American Eagle Silver bullion coins in just four days, this week’s batch of Silver Eagles is more in keeping with quantities seen in the months leading up to the end of 2015. The Mint allocated one million ounces of Silver Eagles for the week starting yesterday, and as of this afternoon 950,000 of those had been bought by authorized purchasers. That leaves 50,000 American Eagle Silver bullion coins left for buyers until new inventory arrives on Monday.

Demand has remained high since then; as of Thursday afternoon, the Mint has run out of the four million American Eagle 1 oz. silver coins it had allocated for this week. The U.S. Mint has allocated 1,043,500 ounces of American Eagle Silver bullion coins for sale this week, an increase of 73,500 over last week’s figure.

The weekly allocation totals have hovered just above or below one million ounces in recent weeks. As the Mint’s supply looks more consistent, authorized purchasers have been a bit slower to absorb available inventory. Last week’s allocation of 970,000 was not fully exhausted prior to today.

Yesterday, I noticed that the 2014 American Eagle Silver Proof Coin had been updated to “Unavailable” status on the U.S. Mint’s Website. While it’s not surprising that the mint is winding down its sales of the 2014 issue this close to the end of 2015, it caught my attention because the mint has had trouble maintaining inventory for the 2015 ASE Proof.

As noted on Coin Update yesterday, there have been several weeks in recent memory during which the 2014 coin accounted for the vast majority of ASE Proof sales, while the 2015… Full article at the source>

It’s an interesting time to pay attention to sales of 2014 and 2015 Silver Eagles.

Prior to today’s slight correction, silver prices dropped five days in a row this week, and bullion coins are being swallowed up as fast as the U.S. Mint can produce them. The Proof and Uncirculated versions of the coin are routinely among the top-selling items at the U.S. Mint. The American Eagle is the best-selling silver coin in the world, yet it maintains an allure that exceeds the value of its precious-metal content ($14.44 per ounce as of this writing).

Usually the New Year’s coins are available well before the end of the previous year. I haven’t noticed as many “2015” promotions this year ushering in the New Year. Retail sales have been terrible industry wide. The declining prices of gold and silver certainly have not helped either.

I offered 2015 Silver Eagles several months ago to an unenthusiastic clientele. I have only recently been offered other 2015 dated coins. Some seem very reasonably priced while some of the “certified” coins seem rather high to me.

The Gold and Silver Mine – Understanding mint-state, uncirculated and proof coins

February 25, 2014 in Bullion, Coins, Collecting, Education, Gold, Gold Eagles, Numismatica, Numismatics, Precious Metals, Proof Coins, Silver, Silver Coins, Silver Eagles, US Mint, USA Coins

By: Douglas Keefe. February 24th, 2014. (http://www.shorenewstoday.com/)

Last week’s article spoke about purchasing American Gold Eagles and Silver Eagles for investment purposes. These coins contain 1 full ounce of gold or silver and are sold at a slight premium over the spot metal’s price. Although they have a face value as a coin ($50 for the 1-ounce gold and $1 for the 1-ounce silver)’ they will never be spent as such because the metal value of each coin exceeds the face value. The term for this is “non-circulating legal tender.”

While discussing the investment benefits of these coins with a customer last week, he inquired about their condition, as he was aware how the condition affects the value of older coins. I explained how since these coins were never meant for use in commerce, they all are considered “uncirculated.” However, some people do submit these coins to the independent grading services with the hope that they will be graded MS70 (for mint state 70), the highest grade achievable.

American Silver Eagle Sales Move Into Record Territory

November 13, 2013 in Bullion, Coins, News, Precious Metals, Silver, Silver Coins, Silver Eagles, US Mint, USA Coins

November 12, 2013 By Michael Zielinski (http://news.coinupdate.com)

Silver Eagle Bullion

Silver Eagle Bullion

Sales of the United States Mint’s American Silver Eagle bullion coins moved into record territory today after authorized purchasers ordered their full weekly allocation of 500,000 coins. Total sales for the year to date have now reached 40,175,000 ounces, which exceeds the prior annual record of 39,868,000 ounces reached in 2011.

Demand for the one ounce silver bullion coins has been intense throughout the entire year. When sales for the 2013-dated coins began on January 7, 2013, opening day orders totaled 3,937,000 coins, which seemed to represent the highest ever one-day sales for American Silver Eagles.

After only ten days of sales on January 17, the US Mint was forced to announce a temporary sell out as their entire inventory had been depleted. Sales were resumed on January 28, subject to an allocation process which rationed available coins amongst authorized purchasers. The US Mint uses this allocation process in times when demand for bullion coins exceeds the available supply.

Silver Eagle bullion coins have remained subject to allocation for the entire year. As such, sales figures are not a reflection of full market demand for the coins, but rather a reflection of the US Mint’s production capacity. During the current year, Silver Eagle bullion coins have been struck at both the West Point and San Francisco Mint facilities in an effort to expand the supply of coins available to the market.

Gold Eagle Bullion Sales Recover, Silver Eagles Approach Record

November 2, 2013 in Coins, Collecting, Gold, Gold Coins, Gold Eagles, News, Numismatica, Numismatics, Precious Metals, Silver, Silver Coins, Silver Eagles, US Mint, USA Coins

November 1, 2013 By Michael Zielinski (http://news.coinupdate.com)

After two months of weakness, the American Gold Eagle bullion coins achieved stronger sales during the month of October. Silver Eagle bullion sales exceeded three million coins for the month, with the all time annual sales total quickly approaching.

For the month of October 2013, Gold Eagle bullion sales reached 48,500 troy ounces across all options. The most popular seller by both units and total weight was the one ounce size at 41,000 pieces. The latest monthly sales total breaks the streak of two uncharacteristically weak months. In August, sales were 11,500 ounces, followed by sales of 13,000 ounces in September. The total for August had marked a six year low for monthly sales.
