(Denver, Colorado) July 31, 2017 – The Professional Numismatists Guild (www.PNGdealers.org) presented its 2017 PNG Lifetime Achievement Award to prominent and influential hobby leader Beth Deisher.  The award was announced during the PNG’s annual banquet held this year in Denver, Colorado on July 31, 2017.

Deisher is the Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force Director of the Industry Council for Tangible Assets (www.ictaonline.org).  She was the award-winning Editor of Coin World for 27 years until her retirement in 2012. Over the years Deisher also has conducted workshops and classes on the problems of counterfeit coins produced in China.

These are the other 2017 awards and winners announced at the PNG Denver banquet.

The Robert Friedberg Award for an outstanding book or other literature was jointly presented to authors Pete Smith, Joel J. Orosz and Leonard Augsburger for their reference book, 1792: Birth of a Nation’s Coinage, published by Ivy Press.

The Sol Kaplan Award was presented to four people this year: Bill Walker, a Senior Numismatist at Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas, and jointly to three Missouri law enforcement officials: Sheriff Cory Hutcheson, Chief Deputy Branden E. Caid and Captain Barry Morgan, all of the Mississippi County Missouri Sheriff’s Department.

In early 2017 while in Florida, Walker recovered and subsequently returned to their grateful owner five rare coins that had been stolen a year earlier, apparently while in transit in the United States Postal Service mail.  The coins had a combined value of about $30,000.

In a separate case, Sheriff Hutcheson, Chief Deputy Caid and Captain Morgan successfully tracked down a collector in Florida whose rare coins were stolen four decades earlier when he was a youngster in Charleston, Missouri in 1972.  During a January 2017 search of the Southeast Missouri home of a drug case suspect, the officers discovered and recovered about two-thirds of the coins stolen 45 years earlier. Through perseverance and solid detective work the officers were able to return the coins, some still housed in their familiar blue Whitman folders, to the now adult and quite surprised collector.

The Kaplan Award recognizes efforts and contributions in combatting crimes against the numismatic community, and is jointly presented by the PNG and the Lewis M. Reagan Foundation.  It is named after a former PNG President and Ohio dealer who was personally responsible for the apprehension of several people suspected of committing numismatic-related crimes.

John Maben of JFM Trading, LLC in Lakewood Ranch, Florida received the Significant Contribution Award. It is given to those who have made exceptional, beneficial efforts over the years on behalf of PNG and the profession, and added to the hobby.

Christine Karstedt, Executive Vice President of Stack’s Bowers of Stack’s Bowers Galleries, received the Art Kagin Ambassador Award. This award is named after a former PNG President and nationally-known Iowa dealer who provided distinguished service as an advocate of numismatic goodwill.

PNG Legal Counsel Armen Vartian of Manhattan Beach, California, was recognized during the banquet for 25 years as a PNG Affiliate Member.

The Professional Numismatists Guild is a nonprofit trade association composed of the country’s top rare coin and paper money dealers who must adhere to a strict Code of Ethics in the buying and selling of numismatic merchandise.  The organization also has an Accredited Precious Metals Dealer program (http://apmddealers.org).  For additional information, contact Robert Brueggeman, PNG Executive Director, 28441 Rancho California Road, Suite 106, Temecula, CA 92590. Revamped PNG Website Adds NGC Price Guide

New PNG Home Page

(Temecula, California) – The Professional Numismatists Guild (www.PNGdealers.org) has revamped its website so that collectors now can conveniently find on one site the current retail values of U.S. coins as well as easily locate knowledgeable, reputable rare coin and banknote dealers.  The PNG website also has now been optimized for easy use on mobile devices.

The PNG is a nonprofit organization founded in 1955 and composed today of many of the top dealers in the United States and around the world who must adhere to a strict code of ethics in the buying and selling of numismatic merchandise.  PNG’s revamped website now provides expanded resources to collectors, dealers and the general public.

“In addition to streamlining the ‘Find PNG Dealers’ feature, we now have a prominent link to the extensive Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) online price guide that lists more than 100,000 prices for various U.S. coins in different grades,” said PNG Executive Director Robert Brueggeman.

“NGC is the world’s largest rare coin authentication and grading service, and is the official certification service of PNG.  Their price guide is an authoritative reference for the current values of NGC-certified coins.  So, on one website you can conveniently and quickly get current prices and locate dealers who specialize in buying and selling those coins,” stated PNG President Dana Samuelson.

PNG also plans to add useful “how to” videos to the website to provide useful consumer education and investor protection information.

“Our revised website also offers a link for doing business with members of the PNG Accredited Precious Metals Dealer (APMD) program.  AMPD dealers specialize in buying and selling silver, gold, platinum and palladium bullion coins and ingots.  The APMD website (www.APMDdealers.org) now features current spot prices for precious metals and the top 10 most popular bullion items as well as charts of historical bullion prices,” said Brueggeman.

The NGC Price Guide currently lists values for 125,000 U.S. coins, and can be accessed from desktop computers, tablets and smart phones.

“The NGC U.S. Coin Price Guide features 11 years of historical pricing data with the ability to chart changes in a coin’s value over time and compare historical values for multiple coins. There are two full time analysts, both with decades of coin pricing experience, updating pricing every day in the NGC U.S. Coin Price Guide,” explained NGC Vice President of Sales and Marketing Max Spiegel.

Ohio Teenager Wins PNG 2016 YN Scholarship

Spencer Kinkelaar of Morrow, Ohio

Spencer Kinkelaar of Morrow, Ohio

(Temecula, California) – Spencer Kinkelaar, a 16-year old honor roll student from Morrow, Ohio who enjoys collecting Franklin half dollars and silver American Eagle coins, has been selected as this year’s winner of the Professional Numismatists Guild (www.PNGdealers.org) Young Numismatist Scholarship.

The scholarship will cover airfare and tuition for him to attend a week-long session of the 2016 American Numismatic Association Summer Seminar (www.money.org/summer-seminar) in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Kinkelaar is one of triplet boys, and he credits his father with initially sparking an interest in coin collecting in all three boys.

“As a young child, I was always interested in numismatics.  At a young age, my father showed me his collection, which he started as a child,” Kinkelaar wrote in his application essay.

Last summer, while he and his family were preparing to move from Philadelphia to the Cincinnati area, he rediscovered his old coin collection in the closet.

“Remembering my past, I began to review my collection, excitedly noting my old pastime. I began to research collecting again and went to the bank to search half dollar rolls.  Shortly afterwards, I joined the ANA as a YN,” he wrote.

Kinkelaar said he was “quite surprised” when the PNG notified him about the scholarship award:  “It was quite exciting that the PNG thought I’d be a good candidate to come out to Colorado Springs to learn about numismatics.”

His father, Mark, happily responded, “It didn’t surprise me too much.  He’s quite competitive and I was pleased to learn about it.  I think he’ll enjoy it.  It’s the kind of experience a young man needs.”

“We appreciate what the PNG is doing and the opportunity for Spencer.  It’s a wonderful learning opportunity,” stated Mark Kinkelaar who has enjoyed going to coin shows with him.

Spencer Kinkelaar will be a Junior this fall at Kings High School in Kings Mills, Ohio.  His plans for college include studying economics and finance as an undergraduate, then attending business and law school for post-graduate degrees.

“When I learn about enthusiastic young numismatists, such as Spencer, I feel confident about the future of the hobby,” said Dana Samuelson, PNG President.  “The PNG is happy to provide young collectors with these annual scholarships so they can be part of the outstanding learning experience the ANA offers with its Summer Seminars programs.”

The money to pay for the annual PNG YN Scholarship is administered from the PNG’s Gerald Bauman Memorial Fund.

“Mr. Bauman served for many years as a prominent coin dealer with Manfra, Tordella & Brookes in New York City, and he was a mentor to some of today’s outstanding numismatic professionals.  After he died in 2001, the memorial fund was created as an on-going legacy to him and his mentoring,” explained PNG Executive Director Robert Brueggeman.

The Professional Numismatists Guild is a nonprofit organization composed of many of the top rare coin and paper money dealers in the United States and seven other countries.  PNG member-dealers must adhere to a strict Code of Ethics in the buying and selling of numismatic merchandise.  For additional information, visit online at www.PNGdealers.org or call (951) 587-8300.

“There are two levels of online classes developed by Karl Newman in conjunction with the University of Rare Coins and PNG’s Edward C. Public registration will be on the 7th floor of the hotel.  Admission will be $10 at the door; however, $5 admission coupons are available online at www.PNGdealers.org and admission is free with an invitation from participating PNG member-dealers.

The PNG has obtained special discount hotel rates at the Millennium Broadway that are more than $100 per night lower than currently available even on hotel discount websites for that busy period.  A special discount rate of $329 per night is available by calling the Millennium Broadway Hotel, (212) 768-4400,

and requesting “the PNG convention rate” at the time of booking.

Public hours will be Thursday, October 9, from 10 am to 6 pm; Friday, October 10, from 9 am to 6 pm; and on Saturday, October 11, from 9 am to 5 pm.
