U.S. Mint Breaks Record with 5th Coin of the Year Award

The 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative half dollar won the top prize at the Coin of the Year (COTY) Awards last week at the World Money Fair in Berlin. This if the fifth time the U.S. Mint has brought home the accolade, surpassing Italy’s four wins to set a new world record.

A Mint press release points out that while the Baseball Hall of Fame $5 gold issue won a COTY for Best Gold Coin, the clad version ultimately took home the overall prize because of the increased difficulty of striking a cupped coin in a copper-nickel clad composition.
