On November 27, 2012, the US Mint began accepting orders for the 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set. This was a newly created product type which combined a proof American Silver Eagle with the 90% silver coins included within the annual Silver Proof Set. Many collectors were skeptical of the offering as it was priced at $149.95, which reflected a premium above the costs of the individual components.

Sales for the product opened at a respectable 19,290 units out of the maximum product limit of 50,000. These sales occurred while an ordering limit of two sets per household was imposed.

The conclusion of sales for the 2012 commemorative coins as well as the 2011 September 11 National Medals will occur on December 17, 2012 at 5:00 PM ET. With the deadline fast approaching, sales levels for these products have shown some strength as collectors place their final orders. In previous weeks, there had been large moves for the uncirculated version of the 2012 Star Spangled Banner $5 Gold Coin, although sales for the week have now fallen back to just 87 units with the cumulative total now at 6,454. Stronger sellers for this week included the proof versions of the 2012 Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar and 2012 Star Spangled Banner Silver Dollar.
